The version is irrelevant, the first 7 characters the firmware denote the model it applies to.
Ie: a92f011 is for a c3351
So if the current fw in the machine has a different prefix then no it won't work.We know a thing or two because we've seen a thing or two.

refresh me, does it need to be the only thing on the thumb drive and does it have to be opened or can it stay in the folder?

4 series gets the opened zip contents, (see pic below) on the root as pictured.
the 8 series only gets the FW000xx folder on the root
We know a thing or two because we've seen a thing or two.
