Yes, that's how I understood you. I think that's a very shady practice, but there's nothing I can do about it, since I'm not aware of anyone other than Hytec that offers this type of service, or anywhere else to get a replacement MFPB for a reasonable price.

Down here in the SE USA, clean, low-click C308's are going for around $2500-3000. If I could get one for under $1000, I'd jump all over it.
I wouldn't give you a kick in the rear end for an i-series. lol

Hytec is a very reputable company. When they say a board is unrepairable (I've only heard that once) it is due to components not available, or a physically damaged board.
They aren't known for lying and telling you your core is bad.

I agree they are reputable and have used them for 25+ years. They make enough money for a repair which most of the time is a simple one bad componet on board. So they will repair if they can. They have repaired boards for me many times over the years.
Just recently I sent an i series CPU to Hytec and it was not repairable. My choice at that point was buy a repaired one outright or send them a repairable one with advance exchange.

I'm glad to hear you guys trust Hytec... and I trust you!
So do you all think I'd be better to send them my board for repair, or better to do the advanced swap? I'm in no hurry.
I'm most interested in the highest chance of ending up with a working machine, without wasting money unnecessarily.

Then I think the repair with their one year warranty is way to go. But first I would call their tech support hotline if you didn't already and discuss the issue with them. They have helped me in the past with their knowledge of specific machines electronics and what board to send in, etc.

Good info, greatly appreciated. I didn't even realize they had a tech support line. I'll give that a shot, thanks!
