One thing of note..You must use a crossover cable to connect the Fiery to the MPF this way..IMHO you should leave it the way it is..Separating the Emperon from the Fiery gives you printing regardless of the Fiery..IF the Fiery is down and you are running the way you mention then you will also lose the Emperon..Were you able to access the Fiery from the CP beofre you made the changes? E

all nics are auto-crossover now. ive used a straight cable a whole bunch of times but if it comes with one yes, use it.

My EFI rep would say.

If it says connect crossover cable, use the crossover cable
He also says that EFI uses a HDD with a particular set of charecteristics, simply popping in an off the shelf HDD may not work. In some cases you have to purchase the EFI HDD. E

As far as the hard drive is concerned you can replace it with a SSD with no trouble, I do this all the time. Fiery boots much faster and SSD wont fail as fast as a regular HDD.
