[Misc] Use a generic HID card reader for authentication

we have 10 c558s managed by PaperCut. according to the documentation all card readers with keyboard emulation are supported. so we went ahead and purchased 10 generic keyboard emulation card readers.

It turned out the MFDs treat this kind of card reader as a keyboard (as expected), but since it isn't treated as an authentication device, papercut does not pick it up. Any idea how we can set a generic card reader as an authentication device? The reader works fine without a LDD, and apparently there is no driver written for this device.

      It's a a ZKTeco IC USB model
      Hardware ID: HID\VID_FFFF&PID_0035&REV_0001&MI_00

On a computer it functions just like a regular keyboard where a card-swipe is the equivalent of typing out the card number and hit enter.

if we do that, the mfd will complain that it cannot find an authentication device because the card reader is recognized as a USB keyboard.

have you installed the correctly configured LDD driver to the machine?
i saw you said no LDD is loaded.
from the 8 series and up we customize an LDD driver. i seem to remember a bulletin saying KM wont make them anymore and you have to program it yourself.
i remember some app you type some info and it makes the tar file for you.
if i remember more ill post it.

            The medication helps though...

If you just plug the reader in and do not tell the machine what it is, it just identifies it as a keyboard..Confiigured like this it will never work for authentication..The machine needs to understand the reader is present (Service mode/Authentication card settings) and the LDD which gives the machine the proper VID/PID codes..This is where creating your own LDD with the KM tool might help. If you can get the Vendor ID and PID codes in device manager and program a new LDD with these codes it might work, this is assuming you are using KBW mode. E

Yes this makes sense. Any idea where I can find this KM tool? Google searches return nothing.

Auth device tool advanced is maybe what you need although I'm not sure it will work with any type devices.

the LDD file you have is likely already been modified, you may need a raw one.
i lost my access to MKM so i can send you another one to try?
