Was wondering if anyone out there has ever tried to restring a main charge on the KM5050. I would like to have a spare when a machine goes down when Im on site.
The experiences of myself and my collegues here has led us to that policy of we won't touch that corona unless we have to and I know of no one who has restrung one.
Too many have tried to get in and clean them and when you put it back in you either have shading or solid black copy. You many notice they went away from that design in the later models.
However I do carry a spare.

I haven't found a way to do this. By all appearances the grid has to be removed before the primary can be strung. I haven't had much luck with cleaning either. The image quality always coming out worse than before after cleaning.
I usually stock a new primary unit, or a scrap primary unit that survived 500K to the PM.
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Yes, and if you did for the first time, it's a bear. Better off to order the MC-710 ( assembly ) and practice on the old one.
I have had to do a couple recently. I used the Canon silver wire that we use from Katun. Copies were not as crisp and clear after being restrung, but they looked ok on plain text (which is what most people do). Luckily both times were on machines with less than 100k to go before the next PM kit. Not sure what the implications would be if the charge had to last 400K.
