Re: Open-source drivers
The transmission of that data has got nothing to do with your print drivers...
That data will be collected on the machine itself. Manufactures are not looking at sensitive data or rather not supposed to anyway..
Who said there is nothing like a bad question. Why does this thread exist?
Mmm Huawei and Hikvision should definitely not make printers and time soon. Xerox back in the day had a camera strapped to the machine inside...
It is instructive to think about the latter perhaps. What disadvantage could it be for the manufacturer to let the source be open. Because if it costs the manufacturer a whole lot in some way, then they might be hesitant to do so. Of course, I will not tell you what to think of any of this, but it might provide you a clue as to what might be the causes that all the source is closed. And if you have the appropriate precondition, it could perhaps motivate the subject of the thread so you don't end up in a UN Smart City by 2030 and own nothing to be happy. Unless there actually exist some open source firmware, perhaps it is best for an admin to just close the thread. To me, it looks like the observations that: (a) printers like to send data to the manufacturer and (b) the user doesn't really have a way to audit what gets sent over, has caused negative feelings for some readers. So it is best to shut the thread down so we can all have pleasant emotions inside. Personally, I would agree with this because I am looking for open source firmware, and not an argument.Last edited by mikrev; 02-19-2023, 01:51 PM.Comment

Re: Open-source drivers
To answer your question, mikrev, yes I do.
To set up a print driver RAW is to set it up totally manually in a windows system. That means set up the port manually, usually a TCP/IP port. Then usually browse out to the print driver .INF file or sometime .PPD file. Then tie it all up and test the print driver and make sure it works. You do have to have the manufactures driver to do this. But installing a print driver RAW or manually steps around the manufactures built in BS that sends reports.
At least in my experience.
I hope this helps.Comment

Re: Open-source drivers
After reading mikrev comments after many tried to help him, I thought to myself, gee, what an a-hole. His completely condescending comments mix in with a good portion of tin-foil hat paranoia (to me) is a bit off the charts. I mean, if he truly wants a printer that wont send info back to the manufacture, go get a movable type press.
But now that I have had time to think about it, I just feel sorry for the guy. What a world he chooses to live in.
We should leave this post up as a reminder of how not to be.
That is what I think. Now I'm gonna leave this string alone.Comment

Re: Open-source drivers
If you install the printer driver in RAW mode, it won't notify anyone about the process or its status.Comment

Re: Open-source drivers
whats the point of having the option to select no if it's still gonna send info? the info it does send, when it is sent is only giving an idea of the usage of the machine. if it were actually giving personal data, how long do you think they would remain in business?Comment
