I'm trying to remove the fixing assembly from a Panasonic 7718 copier. According to another tech, the screw in the fixing assembly knob is reverse thread. Is there a was to lock the rollers into position so we can remove this screw? We have the service manual, but it gives on removal or istall instructions.

Yes, the thread is reversed (clockwise to loosen). As far as I know there isn't a way to lock the rollers but you shouldn't need to. The weight of the roller should be enough resistance to allow you to loosen the screw. Just give it a quick jerk and it will loosen up enough that the rollers won't spin as you continue loosen it. If you need further instruction for removing the fuser, just ask.
Good luck.Just because you're not paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

The knobs do usually come off with a good quick twist, but if not, I have used a pair of needle nosed vice grips to lock on to the the shaft of the knob, and after removing the UFR, (the only reason to remove the knob is to replace the LFR, so you have to do it anyway), I lock the knob shaft and turn the LFR to unscrew.
If toner is dropping on the page, it's likely due to the toner support, (entrance seal), To pull the drum unit, first pull the waste toner bottle, and the one screw on the drum cover. Next pull out the black handle by the developer and twist it clockwise. drop the T + S unit, and remove the big brass (usually) screw securing the drum unit. Pull the drum unit straight out. Remove the Charge unit with the one screw, and then the top cover, 2 snaps. Their a pin in the front of the drum unit to remove the drum, 1 screw, pull the pin and the drum should fall out. Behind the drum you will see the toner support, 3 screws, and you have to pry it from the frame as they use a strong adhesive to seal it from toner. (When replacing the toner support, I dab my finger in some toner and smear it across the adhesive lightly to keep it from sticking too badly.) Don't remove the toner support unless you have one on hand. The cleaning blade is held on by a spring in the front of the drum unit, remove the spring, then remove the screw securing the blade in the hole on the top side of the cleaning unit frame, then you can lift out the cleaning blade assembly, which is about the only way you will be able to remove the toner support.
If you notice toner clumping in the cleaning unit, it is likely the ozone filters are clogged, you can remove them by finding the 2 small brass screws behind the left side (fuser side) cover, open the fuser door, and look towards the rear of the opening, you will see the ducts for the fans, you can remove the whole side cover, or you and just remove the 2 screws for the filters, and work them out of their place. Those filters have been known to get thrown away, but if you have a "clean" machine, removing those filters will turn those covers black over time, throwing away those filters will prevent the toner from clumping more effectively then just cleaning the existing filters.
The developer slides right out, once you remove the cover (may or may not be there) for the developer connector. I don't think Developer is available anymore for these machines, although if you happen to find a source I would appreciate any info. There is a seal on the front end of the developer unit, if it is flattened badly or decayed, I recommend replacing it, it can cause a toner mess, and possibly light copies.
BTW, if you replace the drum, run F8-14, and F8-20, if you replace the developer run F8-09. I think the PM cycle on those machines are 60K for wires and DCB, and 120k for the Drum, Toner support, Web, Developer.
Hope this Helps, Good Luck.Comment

After 2 months of working on this unit, I finally fixed the original problem which was toner leaking on the paper as it was processing copies. I had to replace the drum unit, the drum cleaning blade, and the toner support blade. My thanks to all for the assistance, especially logged-on, for the detailed instruction on how to remove the drum and developing unit.Comment
