I'm looking thru some of the non-ssl-email threads and will hopefully come up with something. Since we use gmail, I'm working on using Google's smtp-relay, but I'm having issues getting it to work. The machine won't connect on Port 25, so looks like we're lucky enough to have an ISP that blocks it. The machine will communicate on 465 & 587, but comes up with a connection error when connecting. Looking more into the information Google Provides, it seems to be setting thru the g-suite admin console, which hasn't worked so far, even following their directions. Suppose I'll give their customer support a call this week, otherwise it's back to the drawing board.

    Thanks Again!
I have a number of schools using Google Apps which I set u to use the Restricted Gmail SMTP server. aspmx.l.google.com. the restriction is that you can only send to another gmail, google aps or G suite address. They usually send to themselves then attach additional information and send it the desired recipient, i.e. using scan to email as an equivalent to scan to folder. If it does not work, then you are being blocked by your ISP.

Once it's set up, it wouldn't even have to have peripherals connected to it, as you would control it via RDP. It would, of course, stay on 24/7.

Set it up to be a mail server, and point the MFP at it for SMTP, and even add some shared folders to it if you want.

I am almost positive it would need to be Windows 7 Pro (or higher); it's doubtful that Home or lower would work.
If you get a used Windows 7 computer, you could also use it as folder server for scan to folder. Just setup a separate folder for each user.

        Current problem:
Yes true there are cheap PC/Latops out there.
If he is going to use Win7 on a PC he may as well scan everything to SMB on the win7 box, and then share the Win7 box scan folder with all other machines on the network. This scan to SMB via the Win7 box will keep everything in-house and secure.

The Win7 PC will need to be on at all times...

        Other options:
He could try scanning to a USB stick/drive that is plugged into a router/modem. All other PC's can access the USB stick shared drive, via FTP or Network share link from normal Win Explorer.
You can set port forwarding on the modem/router and a lot of other options....

I believe a Network Attached Storage Device would also accomplish the SMB scanning, but FTP would be free and easy to try first.

I agree, a NAS would be a definite possibility.

The only issue I see with it would be compatibility: There would be no guaranty that it's version of SMB would play nice with that of the copier, and no MFP manufacturer ever touts any sort of NAS compliance. (I had this happen with a customer a year or so ago.)

One plus in using the Win 7 PC is that it would offer FTP, email, and SMB.

In addition, if it is of any interest, you could add an OCR program to the PC, and have it watch folders and OCR the output into searchable, and even editable text.

I'd like to find an OCR program that can do a half decent OCR.
I don't do a lot of OCR work but I do have DVD's full or old scanned docs that I cannot e-search.

I agree, it's anything but an exact science, but they are not all created equal, and some do much better than others.

At least OCR keeps getting better over time.

Of course, the accuracy is dependent on the quality, fonts used, and general layout of the scanned pages.

I just put it out there as an added potential benefit, even though it would add extra cost.

I had a customer put in a NAS at the suggestion of their IT service. Worked great for automatically backing up their computers with the included software. Did not work at all for scan to folder. Customer said brochure said it was supposed to support scan to folder and that the problem was mine to correct. I did a quick search on the make and model and found that the brochure covered about four different models.I looked at the specs for each model. The model they purchased, lowest priced, only supported access using their software. Only the two top end models supported supported SMB2. Price was more than double.

Kinda not really related, but I had a customer whose NAS would not work with GlobalScan.

A patch for the NAS ultimately made it work, but not until after about 2 months of misery...all SMB issues.

The C3500 does not support SSL, which is why gmail will not work. They could pay for a facoty trained tech to come out and install firmware...

I have been using gmail with non SSL machines for years. Just use the port 25 SMTP server aspmx.l.google.com. You are limited to sending to only Google email addresses, but you can always send to yourself and then forwarde to who ever you want.

As may have been suggested above, all that is required is updating the firmware, specifically the network controller, 5 minute fix.

Or if you don't have access to this firmware simply use an old Win XP PC etc, set it to never go into sleep, turn on file & print sharing, create a shared folder(s) & stick it on your network.

Amos, I open WIM, I can see the scanned document in the list, I can print it, but can not download it nor transmit it.
I have checked the Ricoh guide, but it is not clear to me what I am doing wrong.
Can you give some more info, because I think indeed it is a usefull tool...
                              Thanks in advance.

To be able to download it you would need the File Format Converter Option installed in the machine
