    ^ Exactly this ^

Set SP5-886-111 to 1 & I also set SP5-886-112 to 0 (auto update when machine is idle)

Automatic firmware updates on newer models is just activating the SP (SP8-886-xxx if I recall) and ensuring the common cert is written as a 2048 bit cert, SP5-870-x. No @Remote required. Early models supporting this may need an initial manual update to make the appropriate SP available.

Bear in mind, this is only available on the xx04, xx54 and the IM models. Not on any previous models.

          Thanks all

I've got an agreement with Ricoh, they wasn't aware of any websites selling their firmware, but would look into it.

          Have a nice day.

have not heard of this method before. i know how to access and enable the SP mode that you mentioned. after a reboot should it pop-up and run the update in the same fashion that it would if i were updating from a SD card? or is there a specific scheduled time that it runs? i am testing this in office on a MPC3504ex. i did see see that you can schedule a time for it to not start, nor stop that update at a specified time. i read that it looks at the server every 76 hrs. does it take that long before the first update? or should it begin after a reboot if a new version is available?
              thanks for your input.

It will not start right away. You have to wait a few days, I don't know if it takes the entire 76 hours till it tries, but it does take at least a few days. If you are in more of a hurry, then you will have to update a different way. I just turn on the function at time of install and never have to be concerned with it again.

Once the auto update SPs are enabled and the machine rebooted the update firmware button you see when entering into SP mode will work and allow you to force check / update. Historically this required an @Remote connection but it works on ARFU enabled machines as well.

thanks again for the info. yeah that's kinda what i suspected would happen, since i didn't see it begin after a reboot. just wanted clarification.

Firstly, the check and download is in the background and is well throttled, so you won't actually notice any action when it checks and downloads and queues the update.

Secondly, there is a default 'prohibition' time, so ideally it will not apply an update during the normal / typical work day.

Thirdly, it only checks in periodically, every few days if I recall and not necessarily following a reboot.

Finally, certain conditions have to be met, things like idle time, no existing error states etc.

So, generally speaking you will never actually notice the update process unless you trigger it manually.
