[Error Code] MP C6501 HDD Replacement

    Hello,

We have MP C6501, was working fine but we decided to use it as a donor and took 1 of 2 HDD's out. Now im thinking of restoring it.
I tried adding a different HDD and go through the procedures of formatting HDD preseting stamp data, but with no luck.
I couldnt find information about what size HDD's can you use for this machine. So far i have done the following :
    • Installed another HDD 500GB together with original 160GB.
    • Entered SP5832-1 to format the HDD's.
    • Entered SP5853-1 to download the fixed stamps from ROM to HDD.
    • Turned machine OFF/ON.

Seems like simple procedure but i get the error SC860 together with other HDD related errors : SC870 SC872 SC925.
Question is can i use any HDD ? Can it be the same size ? Or is this some sort of special HDD that cannot be replaced by anything else?

    Appreciate all the suggestions. Thanks.

Unfortunately the HDD's have to be a matched pair. I'm willing to bet they have to be quite a low capacity too, as you say 160GB.
It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

    Hit it.

From the service manual on HDD replacement "The two disks are always replaced together as a unit. Never attempt to replace a single disk." Usually when Ricoh says this the disks are formatted by Ricoh as a matched set and you cannot use just any HDDs. You have to order the unit from Ricoh or a used equipment that parts out machines. The HDD unit will include both drives, the mounting bracket for the drives and possibly the cables. Otherwise the C6501 will not recognize them.

Seems like its the case. The machine indeed does not recognize them. I looked all over parts catalog but couldnt find HDD unit, only the bracket. Would be nice atleast to find out whats the cost of the unit. Maybe somone would be kind enough and has the code. If not then thank you guys for answers will try to look for it.

Its around the $400 mark so I would assume its not just the bracket!

We have remaining toner for the machine, thought we could use it up. But agreed, not worth it. To the salvage it is. Thank you guys for answers, loving this community.

You do not need to order the drives from Ricoh. I have used two 250GB drives off the shelf plenty of times.

Have you done this specifically with this machine ? I know that other machine HDD's can be replaced with any other of the shelf. But i tried two 160GB HDD's and it didnt want to format.
If you certain about this im willing to get 2 used identical HDD's to try. Did you preformat them to FAT32 ?

Yes I have done it on MP C6501, I did not preformat, I just put them in and used the format function in the machines service mode. Did you go into service mode to format them?

Here is the poop as I understand it. The 2 hdd's are in a striping array. Striping increases the r/w speed of data transfer, plus increases the total storage. The 2 hdd's need to be the same size, preferably new unpartitioned. Find 2 identical hdd's, if they are used, do a low level format on each. Stick them into copier and have copier format the hdd's. In theory you should be g2g.
                              I've proved mathematics wrong. 1 + 1 doesn't always equal 2.........
