If it temporarily cleared up after replacing the drum I would suspect something in the toner recycling transport. If you had the same problem right away (notice my fear of spelling 'immediately') I would think you have a problem with the developer unit. I'd definitely lean more toward the process unit with it clearing up after the first copy.

I'm thinking maybe the DV entrance seal. When the copier does things like this, I would make sure that the seals-drum side seals, cleaning seal, dv entrance seals, etc., are all new. Also, when the dv was set up, was the toner supply hole covered up when setting up the dv? With the dv units being so small, a little bit of excess toner will cause it to be a little bit overtoned, and this will potentially "throw" a bit of toner spots from time to time, but clean up after the drum goes through the blanking cycle.

It's probably a simple fix, it's just a matter of narrowing it down a bit. Try a dv entrance seal first-quick and simple.

Also, make sure that all of your SMC settings are at their factory specs.

If the fuser cleaning roller has a huge buildup on it similar copy quality issues will occur due to chunks of melted toner breaking off of it.

Did you change the drum cleaning blade?

            Copysys-
I have also seen all of these issues. Work them through one by one.

            Schooltech-
You are right there in ID. I am in MT. We need to hook up one of these days and compare notes over a cool beverage, lol. Maybe I can sweet talk you away from yer gov't job back into the private sector! (Also I have noticed that a few other techs in close proximity to us frequent this board. Maybe we need to form a coalition!)

(And maybe the gentleperson from AZ would like to move north. The economy is going bad big time down there.)

            Regards

I don't know-the gov't sector is pretty nice. It offers some perks I've never dealt with in the private sector, like NO ONE RIDING ME and dealing with STATS and stuff. In compares closer to when I used to be a service manager. I run my own show here, so that part is very nice.

The Northwest Copier Tech Coalition!!!! I thought we were about the only two from this area on the Ricoh Board.

Copysys, how is the troubleshooting going? Have you narrowed it down a bit? When looking at something like this, it's all about going back to the basics, like starting with your voltage settings. There's no reason fighting a poor running engine if the gas has water in it.

there are some soft- and hardware modification for the fusing unit: the stripper pawls + springs and cleaning roller has been changed, a new firmware is doing some more cleaning cycles

Just a Quick point theses machines are notoriously dirty runners especially first copies my advice is if the second copy is good you are doing well !!

But, as long as you make sure the all pm parts are up to date plus the drum unit and transfer unit are vacuumed all should be be good. Also make sure the dev (mag) roller is shiney

Thank you all for your help. When I replaced the dv, the dv unit ground on rear of the unit fell off, causing the problem.
Thanks again for all your help
