[CQ] MP2851 light print jobs and "Add Toner" message

I'm working on a Ricoh MP 2851 with over 611K copies on it. After replacing the toner cartridge a couple of week ago (according to the end-user), it started producing light copies. I performed an internal test print (I printed out the network specs) and the whole page has grey print vice black. I cleaned the laser glass and performed both a SP2908 (Force Toner Load) and SP2801 (Developer Initialization). Rebooted the copier and now it's stuck in "Add Toner". I check the toner is being delivered to the hopper (some spill on the developer unit), check the shutter door for proper operation (passed) and for clogging (chunks of toner)-none found. Oh and I cleaned the the developer plug and receptacle. The toner bottle is 2/3rd full.

Any assistance would be deeply appreciated.

Deja vu. Please refer to the following thread as it is very much the same. The 2550 is the previous model to the 2851 and other than minor electronic changes are exactly the same mechanical engine. Forgot the link.

99% chance the Dev unit gears are clogged up with developer and plastic dust. You need to order and replace

      1 x B0393060
      2 x B0393062
      2 x B0393245

I usually remove some of the developer on these and the MP2501 range because a full bag Dev is just too much for the Dev unit to circulate and then the gears last much longer.

611k when was the dv last changed?

Common issue, replace the developer & gears.

Correction, the meter on this copier is 118K, not 611K. And this is the first time I have serviced this unit. I didn't see a maintenance card nor did the customer have any records. According to the PM, the developer should be replaced at 120K impressions. And from what I have read, it would be better to replace the developer then rebuild it.

Forgot to add that these damage the big white gear on the main drive gearbox when the Dev unit seizes up so I'd take a main drive ass'y with me just in case.

Ricoh design these dev units to be rebuilt.

You can however order a complete PCDU but you will still need to add the developer.

You mean when the worm gear of the motor spins against it.

Precisely...stupid design and wish I knew why they changed it from previous design that never had an issue regardless of how many times the Dev unit seized up

I don't have that particular model around, but if I remember correctly, mount the type1027 (?), it comes to us already complete with developer, and the strips to tear, I agree, we pay about 110 original euro, with what you save , the new transfer roller turns up..lol

                          Good afternoon,

I performed an inspection of the developer assembly. Both the IDLER GEAR (B039 3062) and the DEVELOPMENT ROLLER GEAR (B039 3060) were worn. Considering the number of impressions, I'm going to replace the whole DEVELOPMENT CASE (B209 3370).

Thanks to all of you for the assistance.

My experience with them is that even with the redesigned development case they don't last more than 4 PMs. Before developer leakage into the gear area becomes apparent.

If memory serves, I thought Ricoh was winding down production of the 1027 PCU and only doing refurb units instead of completely new ones. It's been a long time since the LD 122/127 boxes so how much longer will Ricoh even keep the PCU around as an item?
