Re: RICOH Firmware Update Tool allows users to install firmware updates themselves.
If a machine has Streamline or and other Java apps running I do not touch the firmware. As long as it's running I leave it alone. All other Ricoh machines I work on, I turn on auto update SP5886-111 and turn off java SP5730. If the machine does not have auto update, I update it with ARMS if it's on @remote or I use the SD card method if it's not. Once the machine is up to date, it's easy to keep it updated as you go.
I've not had a problem with buggy firmware except for a few times with Streamline, so I don't do those units anymore.Comment

That has not been the case for a few years now. You should be able to update Java and not break any apps. A few years ago, I updated Java on several hundred MP 4002s at one account, all were running eCopy ShareScan Embedded. It did not break any of them.
Streamline now only requires Java on non-SOP machines. Not sure of the exact model cutoff/breakdown...that always seems to get complicated. Since Java is going bye-bye, no MFP apps should require it anymore.
Although rare, there have been a few cases where newer firmware messes Streamline up, but that normally only comes into play when different updates are mixed and matched, not updating all of the effected ones at the same time.
There is definitely something to be said for package firmware...it gets 'em all.“I think you should treat good friends like a fine wine. That’s why I keep mine locked up in the basement.” - Tim HawkinsComment

Is there any admin setting needed to make all units wrk with that tool?
Edit: my fault - seems we have some different log in credentialsComment

Re: RICOH Firmware Update Tool allows users to install firmware updates themselves.
Nice one, just did a test in-house and an update on a MPC3001 went well. I do have some more Ricoh MFPs in our network but I can't discover or specify most of our units even if I can ping them and enter the web interface.

I had not really gone through the settings on that machine as I would before delivery, and it turns out, several settings in the network Security section were inactive. As soon as I activated them (other than WSD), I was able to discover and update the F/W with the tool.
I haven't bothered to try and isolate the exact module, so I can't say which one specifically cause the issue

customers don't even know how to put toner in the copier. so yeah i wouldn't trust them do a firmware update. and as was pointed out the flaky firmware that ricoh puts on the site is.......Comment

Anything xx04 and above has the Application Site where the customer can do the package themselves anyway, not had one bugger a machine up yet. It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

I think this one is to consider for some large accounts with own (and competent^^) IT departments.Comment

I also discovered the solution to the issue I had (and posted about here the other day) in discovering a particular model.

Re: RICOH Firmware Update Tool allows users to install firmware updates themselves.
It's SSDP (Simple Server Discovery Protocol) that needs to be enabled. I tried enabling all of the functions I had disabled on our office MP 171 and then trying to connect. If it didn't make a difference in connecting, the service or protocol was disabled again. Once this was enabled, I was able to connect to the machine.
Good to know.
I typically enable everything other than WSD on every one of my units so I hadn't bothered trying to isolate.
I also (coincidentally) had a call on an old MP171 myself today, and decided to try an update using the tool, and it worked flawlessly.
Again, I'll never advise my clients do this, it's just an excellent tool for me to use myself going forward, and I'm so thankful it was introduced in this thread.
I'm typically only dealing with small workgroups that have a single machine, to a few machines at most, so for me, it's great!Comment

Re: RICOH Firmware Update Tool allows users to install firmware updates themselves.
At the same time, with SSDP disabled, you also have a great safety feature to keep customers from trying to update their machines.

This is a great tool for all of the techs that post here looking for firmware, it is now available to everyone for free.Comment

I have mixed feelings about this now, as I can imagine the challenge it can pose if, it were to happen to large number of machines in the field that too being upgraded by customer itself.Comment
