It shouldn't reduce the image if all the scan settings are correct.

You mentioned the customer was a legal office. Do they use a software to submit documents that also has a scanning option? If so you can install either the network TWAIN or network WIA driver and do pull scans. I had a customer who was a bankruptcy attorney. They user a software that did so. They could set document size, orientation and whether it was on the glass or in the document feeder from within the interface screen.

I'm going to assume that it is LEF until you say otherwise.

You say that you had this problem earlier and did a memory reset and it came right. I would say the first thing you need to try is firmware update for all your modules.

If that doesn't work the next thing I would look at is changing the lens and SBU board as an entire unit. Swap it with another and test. These have a tendency of getting damaged if there's some sort of electrical power surge or fluctuations in the area.

Next up check you laser unit and glass shield on it. Make sure all is clean. PCU thereafter check your drum, charge and developer. If your PCU has done some mileage swap it with another 1 just to test if it corrects the problem.

That's the basic steps. Try it and let us know how it goes.

So you said to Slim, verbatim, several hours ago.

Senior moment. I was trying to get out as much information as possible. In fact, feeding the document through landscape came to me while just seating in my car. Thoughts get scattered sometime.

If she scanned the same document in COPY mode, the document was fine. I performed a memory clear of the scanner (SP8501-9) and the results were acceptable until a week ago. I performed the memory clear again, but this time there was no change. I have attached printouts of the documents, the original, SCANNER mode and COPY mode. If I had the theory of operation, it would help. Any assistance would be deeply appreciated. Thank you.

to me too, it seems like a trivial problem of optical cleaning...or white plate.

First, I want to thank all of your for your assistance. The problem has been resolved and I will be wearing "the cone of shame" for A LONG WHILE. There was a small piece of paper under the THE LH SCALE (PL SCANNER SECTION 1, ITEM 5). I removed the paper and did a cleaning of all the mirrors and the scanning issue has been resolved.

Perhaps there's something wrong with the DF contact glass - you can try and tun it upside down or around 180 degree and see if the image error changes. If not I'd remove the CCD cover and give that area a treatment with compressed air or even wet-clean the sensor and lens carefully. I'd also use different test-orignals in order to clearly say it's just happen via DF scan. Image processing is different so are the results. Try using a graycale chart and perform test scans wth different settings via both DF and glass plate.

Edit: Ahhhhh already figured it out... lol
