C4504ex Firmware Update Refuses to update PDF version from 1.00

I am working on a firmware update of a C4504ex. The Ricoh Update tool states the pdf engine is at 1.0 and has an update available to get to 1.15. The tool updates, stating firmware update was successful but the pdf version is always stuck at 1.0, which fools the tool into thinking there's another update available. The part number listed next to that PDF version in webimage is M5005678.

Does anyone have an explanation or a suggestion on updating the pdf engine on the MP C4504ex?

Running the RFUD tool twice resulted in the following log:

Update Attempt 1 (successful update of other modules): PDF V1.00 -> V1.15
Update Attempt 2 (only pdf module still showing update available): PDF V1.00 -> V1.15

I don't know this for certain, but I know that not all components/ modules are included in the "package" firmware update, and I suspect that the PDF firmware may be one them, and would likely need to be done using the .FWU files on an SD card.

It also seems to me that it would be one of the least important modules requiring an update and therefore not of any great concern.

Update using an SD card. This is full proof method that has worked for years.

Thanks for the responses. It's been a while since I've updated via SD with the biggest obstacle now being my lack of dealer access to the firmware packages. I'm looking through the update package that gets downloaded into TEMP to see if there's any indication which one applies to the PDF module and doesn't seem to be in there- it's just the D24...fwu and the application zips. Can you check for a firmware update file for M5005678 ? I'll also just try and load the pkg from sd and see if that forces the update.

First copy the all the .fwu and zip files to another folder, maybe on the desktop so you can find them quickly. Then open one of the zips with Windows Explorer. Check if there is a readme file or any other text file that might tell what module it is. Of course there is an outside possibility that Ricoh forgot to actually put that fwu in the package.

This firmware history shows the newest PDF is 1.07

The IRIPS PDF is ver 1.15

This is for the US. I unzipped the package, it looks like the PDF is not in there. The IRIPS PDF is in there.

If he is, it's more likely due to an incorrectly installed driver (WSD or IPP port) or the infamous universal driver

Updating all of the firmware fixes most of those problems.

Most SC899 when printing PDF files can be eliminated by flattening the file before printing. To do so you just print from the Print Preview and njot directly from the document.

you shouldn't trust RFUT too much, in case of particular problems it is better to use the modules on the SD card

Thanks for the feedback and suggestions. The initial reason for updating all the firmware was to hopefully iron out some network print performance issues, which occurs mostly with PDF prints and Windows 11. I've tested out different pcl versions and microsoft universal print drivers. It's kind of a sad state determining which driver to choose and it seems to be impacted by the version of windows the users have.


The update utility does a decent job for the other ricoh's on the network, but on this particular machine got hung up reporting an update was available for the pdf module M5005678 immediately after updating. After reading posts, I'm not going to worry about it and suspect that it's the update utility getting confused or just not including pdf updates in the package. The more familiar pdf part number D3BD5733B appears outdated as well and is what's probably triggering the update loop.

For printer drivers use either the PCL6, PCL5E or PS3. Do not attempt to use anything that says V4 or For Universal Print. V4 is only needed by a couple of specialized Microsoft software and even Microsoft has not fully implemented it. Universal Printing has more to do with allowing the pooling of printers.

PDF is a subset of PostScript3. Often referred to as PDF Direct. It allows printing some PostScript fie without having to have the full PDF support.
