    Mp5000 feed problem

    Hey all,

I have a problem that I have not seen before. Customer says tray 1 will jam if the paper in the tray get to about 3/4 to 1/2 inch left in the tray. The log shows jams but I can never recreate the problem while I'm there. I have changed PU, Feed, Sep rollers, and torque limiter. Has anyone else seen or fixed this issue? TIA

I've had a few MP4000 and C3500's with bad paper exit sensors. They would cause the paper to feed an additional sheet about a quarter of the way into the feed path.
Also make sure the tray lift isn't bent or sticking to the plastic at the bottom of the tray, I've also seen the paddle that lifts the paper get bent and stuck.
What jam code do you get in SP Mode?

Check the bushing that the pickup& feed roller holders mount on we've seen a few of them sipling out causing an rubbing type noise and jams , sometimes without the noise.

I believe it is a j003 jam code. I will look at all the things you have suggested. I'm just confused why it only happens when the paper in the tray gets down to about 3/4 inches of paper left. If the tray would be refilled with paper before that it doesn't jam. Very strange, and I have not been able to recreate this problem when I'm there. I might have to just sit there for a couple of hours and run it until it jams.

Try swapping the upper and lower feed units.

the bushing duct tape refers to... pretend to clean the pick up rollers and see if the gears unmesh occasionally

It may have something to do with the feed angle of the paper, when you're at the bottom of the stack the angle is the greatest. Could it be the feed height is too high and and the lead edge of the sheet is hitting the feed roll further back on the roller and not in the nip? Have you tried swapping the cassettes around to eliminate that as an issue?

I recently had an MP5000 that had persistent issues with tray 1 feed and ended up replacing the fee unit as an assembly. I could see nor feel any fault but the new unit fixed the problem.

Got to ditto replacing the feed unit is inexpensive and easy to replace . Have been doing it on problem units with 450k or better .

Sorry it took so long to reply. I have a feed head on order and will report on outcome when I have replaced it. Thank you for all the advice.

I changed the feed unit and the problem went away. I cant see any problems with the old one though. Thanx for all the help.
