Ricoh Aficio CL3500N - Color Register Error

This is the solution from Ricoh website which did not work:

Please press Menu. Then scroll to Maintenance and press Enter. Scroll to Color Regist and press Enter. Scroll to Color Regist Auto Adjust and then press Enter to Auto adjust. If after completing the procedure the error persists, please contact your service representative for support.

    Have any suggestions?

Yes I contacted Ricoh. They refered me to the dealer for service but the printer is outside of warranty. I check the service manual but there is nothing about the error message. The Knowledge base provided the above fix which of course did not fix it. I can of course take it in for service but I was just hoping that someone might have some ideas as I can't find anything about the issue elsewhere. Thanks.

You may need to replace the transfer belt unit.

If you were a trained tech you would know how to use the manual to troubleshoot the errors. Sorry but we have mouths to feed and bills to pay also!

P.S. could have bought a service contract!

I have also seen bad/old drums and developer units cause this, and dirty ID sensors.

You don't need all the parts people are telling you to replace. What you need is a tech to perform the manual color registration adjustment.

                      Color Registration Error

I experienced the same problem with my CL3500N and the reset/recalibration recommendations from Ricoh did not work to eliminate the problem. What did work was the removal of the Color Photo Drum Unit (CPDU) and gentle cleaning/removal of excess pigment from the shutters on the top horizontal surface. Be sure the shutters have been slid to the fully closed position before cleaning (compressed air recommended) and they are closed upon careful reinsertion into the printer assembly. Of course, this should be done in a dark or low light area to avoid adverse impacts to the unit.

                      Good luck!

                        Colour reg error

I've had one of these pieces of crap do this before. It seems to be a side effect of changing the main drive unit after an SC like 486. Engine all clear (SP5-998) sorted the problem for a while, but it came back after a few weeks.

A fellow engineer has replaced the main drive on the C1 model of this type and it's printed perfectly for over 2 years with Colour Reg Error permanently on. If it's giving clean prints, leave well alone.
It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

                        Hit it.

                            Richo CL3500N

I have found through several issues that you may get this error. No matter what it is caused by rather the color PCU or the transfer belt. If you have not tried to replace these it is a place to start. Once it was due to the customer ordering the wrong color PCU and installing it. The other time was that the transfer belt was not properly seated. Sometime just pulling the new belt out and reinstalling can fix this issue. If the belt is on an angle or has too much tention it will not move properly thrus causing the color regist. error. I hope this helps.

on powering up the printer is there an unusual clicking noise if so it could be a gear in the drive unit throwing off the color registration, have a qualified Ricoh service technician service it and save yourself the headaches.
Get your facts first, and then you can distort them as much as you please.
