i have a Ricoh 3228c that won't add black toner. I installed a new box of toner , the machine tries to add toner but no toner is added . The op panel then reads black toner empty please change black toner. I don't know much about this machine. I have done nothing to the machine for this problem except clean the density sensors. Any input is appreciated.

Re: Ricoh 3228c won't add black toner
Are you using original toner, some toner can be faulty.
Have you checked the drum and dev units.
I would look up the parts number for the pumps and see if there interchangeable, and try swapping them. Sometimes these pumps become blocked if using non oem toner.sigpicComment

Re: Ricoh 3228c won't add black toner
I agree with the non-oem toner comment. Could be clogged hoses. Try vacuuming them out, but it's likely the pump.
I wouldn't risk swapping in a used one, since it'll take at least 2-3 hours to replace your first one.
And don't be afraid to use the site search or google, because there's no less than 1000 posts posts on this topicComment

Re: Ricoh 3228c won't add black toner
they sound like an end user so no disrespect to them but attempting to undertake pump work on this machine is going to be hard. First things first is check (as already stated by previous posts) its oem toner, the drum/dev life for the black is in life 60k( i think) then pumps. But if you dont know what your doing then your really up against it.Comment

Re: Ricoh 3228c won't add black toner
If you can swap them around, I would swap them just to be sure. If you have a spare machine around the workshop it might be useful to take the part with you.
You have not mentioned if the Customer is using original or cheap toner and is the location a damp area, after hoovering out the pumps etc the problem is more or less sorted unless the pump is actually gone.sigpicComment

Re: Ricoh 3228c won't add black toner
Customer is using generic toner. I going to try OEM toner before the pump, but I think it's the pump. I vacuumed the lines and it didn't help at all. Thanks for your help.Comment

Re: Ricoh 3228c won't add black toner
If the OEM toner dont work, you will try the pump and if that is working fine then it could be the dev unit is Shot. I have had one were about 85% of the dev had gone duee to mileage and the machine kept churning toner trying to compensate the correct bias..
Might be worth bringing some spares, or second hand dev unit. We usually keep some odd parts on a shelf wrapped in cling film and marked with machine and problem. Im sure if you had a Dev unit spare that had a line on the page, and the problem turned out to be dev unit related. You would be thankful that you brought this part to get the machine up and running for the time being. Not only are you satisfied but the Customer is happy and the SM wont give you the hairdryer for having a machine down for a few days.sigpicComment

Re: Ricoh 3228c won't add black toner
i have this issue on a 3245 and i just changed the toner pump, and the dv clutch with another one on the machine, it seemed to work, then the client called and its doing it again, the k image is very dense and doesnt seem to be week dv? but could the dv itself cause this if in fact its just old dv with low miles?
and it IS a laboring task to get to these parts.I will try the dv tank replacement tomorrow from another machine and post my results.Comment
