So it appears that I can't use SSD on BCR4 models (don't know about CR4) ...
I've tried WD Blue, Crucial MX500, Kingston KC600, and an ADATA.
The models will try to format them for almost a minute then boot with E7-03, same experience in 62-01, ERROR after 20-30 seconds.
    HDD is okay.

Is this after copying data from a known good SSD? And also was it B/M keyed? We tried with an M key, but it didn't work. We don't have any B/M keyed drives or we'd try that.

? It's a 2.5 SATA SSD, the key is only for M.2 connector (CR5 models).
The copier will format a new drive at first boot if it's brand new, or throw a U6 error and you can format it with 62-01.

Sorry, thought you meant the BP series. What is a BCR4 model? Haven't heard that reference before.

Ahhh okay, would have never guessed that. We haven't had a monochrome hard drive fail, but we've put HDDs in the color 70 series no problem, but I don't think we've tried an SSD. We've put SSD's in the 71 series no problem, so long as we put the copied files on it first.

We've been using transcend with a AVIO Duplicator on both color and B/W and so far no issues.

The one I pulled from a 70c55 was 256gb.. Interesting that you haven't had issues with the 128gb version

This is what I've been using:

                            https://www.amazon.com.au/Silicon-Power-128GB-Internal-SP128GBSS3A55M28/dp/B07BWBHZ94?sr=8-8&th=1

Rip'd via Raw Copy Tool the same way as the CR4's. Takes a lot longer, but works fine.
