HP LaserJet 4250 Jam in Top Cover Area

    Hey everyone,

A client of ours has a HP LaserJet 4250 and sometimes when she prints a job the printer will pull from tray 2 and 3 at the same time and jam.
The error code displayed is 13.02.00 Jam in top cover area.
The paper does jam in the top cover area at the exit with both a sheet of letter and legal on top of each other.

Tray 2 size is letter. Paper type is plain
Tray 3 size is legal. Paper type is plain

What we have tried so far...

Swapping the cassette in tray 3.
Tried changing the switch on the cassette from custom/standard.
Verified paper size and type in the settings.

We will try a factory reset on the printer Monday. Until then any more ideas would be appreciated.

Possibly the solenoids in both trays need to be re-padded. The solenoids in optional trays are a bit more involved to get out than tray 2.

      I'll go with that. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
      1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
      2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
      3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
      4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
      5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

I was not aware there was a process to re-pad the solenoids. Typically I just replace them since I'm removing them anyway.
I am using a razor scraper and Goo Gone to get the old sticky pad off, and not bothering to re-pad the solenoids if I return a used one to service. The volume of the printer running more than drowns out any clicking noise the un-padded solenoid might make.

As for removing/replacing the solenoid in the optional tray, you'll find that bit of metal frame in the way of removing the solenoid. I've had good results with pliers (and a bit of anger) in bending that metal out of the way and reforming it when the solenoid is replaced.

Where can you buy the pads? I have found(sometimes) cleaning the sticky residue off and using without the pad doesn't work.

Have tried many times to re-pad solenoids with little success. Too thin and the solenoids stick from residual magnetism....too thick it wont ever release.

We use sticky felt for the small solenoids and thin sticky sponge for the larger ones. Not too sure where we get the stuff sorry. Both work better than the OEM foam, where the adhesive bleeds through and causes sticktion.
Don't leave them naked, the other solenoids will make fun of them and they will rebel and cause you issues later on (magnetism).

I have two choices of replacement pads:
                    1) Other language self-adhesive control panel stickers are made of a nice thick material and will never get sticky.
                    2) I have a section of old bicycle inner tube and a single hole hand punch. You can punch a nice 6mm disk of 1mm thick rubber and adhere it with superglue.

I don't like vinyl electrical tape because it will eventually peel off or migrate around, leaving sticky stuff. And yes, if you leave it without the pad the metal-on-metal contact will magnetize it. =^..^=

I clean the pad off then take the metal (the part that had the pad on it) and bend it slightly so that the plate and the magnet don't come in contact with each other. I've been doing it this way for years and have never had to come back to one.

Electric tape is the let me get the %#^& out of here fix. The problem can be that people are picky and every time it energizes it will make a fairly loud clicking noise . So...Some kind of pad is necessary.
