HP Designjet 6200, wants heads changed after not liking Maintence cart.

So, cust got message to change maint. cartridge, and he did. Said it made a bad noise after, so he put old one back in. Now has message to change all printheads. If you go through the motions it will start set up and give codes 28.3.02 and the others for each head. Heads are within date. Seem odd that out of the blue it ask for them all. I visually checked everything I could see. Tech support I have so far says to change all the heads. Any ideas would help.

Just a guess here but it sounds like the user didn't remove the plastic cover on the new maintenance cartridge, or didn't have it seated correctly, and the carriage then tried moving over the cartridge and damaged the printheads.

I've seen printers tell you all printheads need to be replaced. Usually power cycling the printer resolves this. But if they are physically damaged, then you have to replace them.

Inspect the bottom (nozzle side) of the printheads for damage. If they look OK, then I would power up the printer with all the printheads removed, wait for it to initialize, then proceed to install the printeads, watching the printer's response to each head being inserted.

28.3:02 = Light Cyan/Light Magenta Printhead is nearing the end of it's useful life. I suspect that some or all of the printheads were already past life anyway. When the Maintenance Cartridge was changed, the machine was powered OFF/ON ... and the machine noticed: "Hey, those printheads are past due also ... ". Sometimes, you can prompt past those end of life messages, sometimes not. See if you can. Otherwise you'll need printheads.

If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
      1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
      2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
      3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
      4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
      5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Had a similar issue recently. Went and evaluated a Z6200. After printing the image diag page, I noticed one of the heads was missing a few tick marks for the nozzles. Nothing to worry about at that time.

Ordered what was needed, came back, replaced the maintenance cartridge first, then, after a reboot of the plotter, it came back and said that printhead was degraded. It wasn't THAT degraded. Just a few tick marks on one of the colors.

These printers make a huge amount of aerosol inside the machine. It's important to clean the drop detect sensor on a regular basis. I don't remember if the printer actually prompts you to do so at some interval. If the drop detector is dirty, it can cause printheads to be rejected for even minor defects. Ironically, when a printhead is completely dead, the printer seems unable to detect it.

There is also a drop detect calibration. If that fails then you know it's either dirty or needs to be replaced.

To clean it I just dampen a paper towel with Simple Green, roll it up a bit and cram it into the drop detect sensor.. work it around until it comes out clean.

First of all, I apoligize for forgetting about posting this. Cust never got back with me after he got his heads. Texted me and said another plotter at another base was doing same thing and I told him to pull the cartridges and reboot the macchine and never heard back from him.
On a couple of points, the cartridges were all within dat, had a year to go, and i could find nothing wrong with the bad maintenance cart, but it sure as hell made racket. I set them side by side and saw no difference.

            Thanks again for responding
