    Designjet T120 Unspooling Roll

Very strange issue. I've never seen this before.

A Designjet T120 will load a roll fine (forward and rewind). It will print the printer status user print from the control panel, but, will unspool the roll during printing and error out cancelling the print. This happens either from the control panel or from my laptop (printer test page from the driver).

I thought maybe there was to much resistance in the roll, but, I tried moving the roll around slightly. No change. I tried another unopened roll also. No change. Below are the specs of the paper they are using:

    HP Bright White Inkjet Paper
    C1860A

    24in x 150ft (610 mm x 45.7 m)

    90g/m2 (24 lb)

    4.7 mil (119 microns)

See the video I took of this phenomenon:

    Google Drive: Sign-in

Any ideas? I'm guessing the Left Support Roll Basic (T120) (CQ890-67051).

    Thanks!

Make sure the roll can't turn independently of the spindle. If the rewinder doesn't sense tension in the media it will unload the roll.

If you can't turn the spindle inside the roll easily, then I agree it's probably the rewinder that needs replacing, or the main PCA. I believe there's an encoder in the rewinder to give the printer feedback on the spindle's rotation. If it's dirty or buggered somehow, that may be the issue.

The spindle doesn't move at all inside the paper roll (which made me think there was an issue with resistance). Pretty tight.

I'll order the the left support and will report back.

      Thanks Kiran!

I agree that you're probably getting a rewinder error. It detects a rewinder error then the feeding of paper does not cause the roll to rotate the expected number of times. It can happen for quite a few reasons:

*the core does not fit tightly to the spindle
*the end of the paper is not attached to the core
*the spindle ends are fitted loosely
*the rewinder motor assembly in not properly calibrated
*the rewinder motor encoder disc is contaminated (usually with ink) and not detecting motor rotation
        *firmware/timing issues

If you've already ruled out the core/spindle/spindle ends, you can try calibrating the rewinder mechanism. After fussing with the procedure in the manual for over an hour, I got some advice:
Power OFF > unplug power cord > remove paper spindles > wait 10 minutes > plug in power cord > power ON > when plotter comes to "Ready" select Paper > Roll 1 > Unload > Roll 2 > Unload > Roll 1 > Load (load roll 1 paper) > Paper Advance Calibration is automatically performed > when complete select Paper > Roll 2 > Load (load roll 2 paper).

I learned quite a lot about rewinder issues after setting up (2) consecutive DJ XL 3600DRF with the same issue. There is a thread about these machines. It mostly affected machines in which the narrower paper was installed in tray #2, and the wider roll in tray #1. The gist of it is that HP did not program the correct amount of time for paper from the lower tray to reach the pinch rollers. After 3 or 4 attempts at new firmware the issue was finally solved.

If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
        1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
        2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
        3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
        4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.

Does this calibration pertain to this low-end T120? I don't see anything in the manual about rewinder calibration.

It wasn't in any manual. And no, I'm not sure about that.

            I would try it. =^..^=

I replaced the left support and it's fixed.

I did tear apart the old one and found what was probably wrong. Look at the encoder wheel at the bottom of the gear stack. It's crooked and was scraping in the sensor. I pushed it back in and it seems to be straight again, but, it was probably to scraped up and wouldn't work right.

                That would explain it. =^..^=
