This is what I do with some T120's. Unplug the plotter when the carriage is in the middle, remove the printhead, then plug the plotter back in. I let it tell me to install the printhead.

I can't tell you which models, but once they go into an error code the Settings Menu may become inaccessible. And if you replace the printhead while in service mode the error will remain. So if I have a machine that is errored out due to a printhead error, and will not allow me access to the settings menu, I'll try going to service mode > Settings Menu > Replace Printhead > ... then remove the printhead and close everything back up, and turn OFF. When I turn it back ON, the machine will notice that the printhead is missing, and prompt me into the printhead replacement menu. I have not had adverse consequences from doing that.

Sometimes on the T120/T520, I have had to unplug the power cord with the carriage in the middle to get the printhead out. I couldn't start the procedure from the control panel. It would only display the error about a problem with the ink system.

It's generally OK to remove ink cartridges, with some old exceptions like the 1050C/5x00/4x00 that pumped air into the ink cartridges and made them virtually impossible to remove without using a lot of force. Anything newer and it's safe to remove the ink cartridges. The printheads... you usually have to start with the control panel purely because you can't access the printheads otherwise, except the T120/T520, I think? Not sure how you would do it on a T730 without going through the front panel first.

Even still, it's not the end of the world if you don't go through the front panel, except the printer may end up making you go through the motions again so it satisfies the procedure.

I've been working on plotters for many, many years now and I've always followed the procedures for things like replacing printheads and ink cartridges.

Meaning, starting the procedure from the control panel.

I worked on a T730 today and met the user, who is an IT person, just not so much a printer person, for an image quality issue. Turns out the printhead the customer purchased is faulty, but, I was going to start the printhead replacement procedure and the user just opened the access door and took out the printhead.


Does this "hurt/damage" the plotter in any way? Not starting the procedure from the control panel?

I'm thinking if you don't start the ink cartridge removal procedure from the control panel, it won't release air properly or SOMEthing from the ink system to remove the cartridge.


I'd love to hear thoughts about this.


BTW......when the tech did this, my anxiety just went through the roof because I don't need to fix problems caused by un-knowledgable IT people.
