[CQ] HP DesignJet 800 error code 56:10

I have an HP DesignJet 800 where the customer complained about white bands across the page. I ran a test copy and found that it seemed to be skipping a line approximately every 6.5 inches or the circumference of the paper drive roller. I performed a paper advance test and the result was "system error 56:10". I removed the drive roller encoder sensor and cleaned it which made it work, for a little while. So I ordered a drive roller encoder disk as it made sense that a bad disk would cause an error every rotation of the roller/disk. I replaced the disk, but the error remains, cleaning the sensor seems to make it work for a little while.

    What would you do next?

    1) Scan Axis Motor?
    2) Drive Roller Encoder Sensor?
    3) Power Supply?
    4) Just oil the silly thing?
    5) Something I've missed?

Appreciate any help or ideas you can share.

    Robin!

Have you calibrated the Paper Advance? after replacing the Encoder?

I would replace the drive roller encoder sensor. I always replace both the sensor and disc together.

By the way, regarding the paper advance calibration; I would go into the service menu, and choose the 'restore factory' option. You never know who monkeyed with it and might have messed up the calibration.

In all my years, I've never had to use the paper advance calibration.

Itanic, no I didn't calibrate the paper advance. To be honest I didn't realize it needed to be done. Doh!

I fond the procedure in the manual and will head over and give it a try.!

Kiran, I ordered the part from Precision Roller and thought I'd get both the disk and sensor, but all I got was the encoder disk. Think I'll order from West Coast Platen next time.... I'll try the "Restore factory" option of the calibration doesn't work.

Thanks for the quick response, I'll be sure to let you know how it works out.

I would only bother with the paper advance calibration if there's an issue after replacing the disc and sensor.

You can always order directly from HP's parts store. Their shipping is pretty reasonable and you can use this code to get 15% off. US22000115

I went back and did the paper advance test and it gave me a sensor fail condition. So I went and did the "restore factory default" and it then passed the paper advance test. However, when we attempted to print, it once again produced the the fault. So I proceeded to perform the Advance Calibration, it printed out the test patter, which had white bands in it from the fault. When I proceeded to attempt to read the test patter it failed and produced a jam condition.

              To review...

The symptom is a white band approximately every 6.5 inches (the circumference of the drive roller.encoder disk). I've had the machine completely apart, removed the drive roller and replaced the encoder disk. I also replaced a broken pinch roller lift arm. I cleaned the existing encoder sensor and was able to get it to work, but the symptoms eventually return. My next step is to replace the encoder sensor.

              Any suggestions?

              Thanks!

My money is on it being the sensor.
