Not a Lexmark tech, trained on Ricoh/Savins, but boss got a deal on this machine. Machine is quite dusty, inside and out (fine orange dust, Texas maybe? Reminded me of the orange dust around Waco.). Quality is fine when printing out demo pages, but through the doc feeder or off the glass, colors are washed out (worst on the outside edges), with faint vertical white lines in the center 1/3 of the page. Cleaned the glass, no improvement. My next step on a Savin would be to remove the glass and clean the scanner, but it's not that simple on a Lexmark, not even close. I looked through the CQ flow chart, but nothing really matches my problem. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Yes, internal scanner optics do get dirty, and it's kind of a big job. You remove the right and left side covers, rear covers, remove DF assembly, then you can see the 6 or so screws that secure the top half of the scanner to the bottom half. Be extremely cautious disassembling and cleaning the optical assembly. There's a CCD, and 3 or 4 mirrors in there that get plenty dirty. =^..^=If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Got the scanner opened up, found crap on the rails, which I cleaned and lubed, opened up the CCD and found all the mirrors coated with a haze. Cleaned them up nice, blew out the rest of the unit, and re-assembled everything. Was disappointed when I fired up the unit and made test copies that there was absolutely no improvement in CQ. So, back to square one, would you suggest the problem is in the CCD or a board, or something else? TIA.Comment

There should be 4 mirrors, one of which faces downward. did you get all the mirrors, lenses, etc, etc?
You're sure that the prints are OK? Try this test pattern:

The internally generated prints are perfect, problem is strictly off the glasses. Thanks for the test patterns, I'll try them. I did not remove any of the mirrors, at least one looked like it was held in place with some sort of black sealant, and the others by plastic clips, which I have become very wary of trying to move - seems like more often than not they are brittle and prone to break. I could not get a straight shot at the lens to clean it, but it looked OK from what I could see with a magnifying glass. I will take it all apart again and attempt to remove the mirrors and get a cloth on the lens. Thanks for your help BC!Comment
