Re: Whats the worst thing that happened to you during install of machine

Way back in the day, I was helping a sales rep on an install when we tried to take the trade in Mita 500D and a Mita 900D down the loading dock steps. We caught 1 wheel of the cart on the top step, and spun around. Down the steps went the Mita's on the concrete totaled. So much for the trade in value........

Once in the parking lot I discovered that there was a bomb threat, and the state police bomb dogs were being brought in. Three hours later, me and the couple of remaining employees that didn't go home went back in and got our stuff. No bomb, just a threat.

      Hmmm, worst. How about this:
We now have a policy that 2 hours IT time are included in the sale price. Any additional time is billable at $150/hr. The installation just before the implementation of this policy was a FalconII. I start with drivers, oh fifteen PC's, ... OK. Then scan to email. Then scan to PC (FTP), yes all fifteen PC's. Then PC faxing. Then fax forwarding. Then a bunch of addressbook entries. Oh, and show us how to use every possible function. And why does it work like that ... ? Ten hours later (over two days) I finally get to leave. And it's a special customer, so I'm to bend over backwards for them.

Now when I start new installs I start with: "You have two hours IT time paid for. How would you like me to use this time? This time is most efficiently used when your IT person is on-hand."

I can't really think of the WORST ever, but one does come to mind.
I was working on a machine in a high school when a security guard bursts into the room, slides a table in front of the door, and tells me to "STAY CALM". There was a riot going on in the hallways; and I mean a full scale riot. There had to be 30- 40 kids beating each other up and down the hall with desks and chairs and fire extinguisher and whatever else they could find. And this was a co-ed riot as well; extensions and weaves everywhere. The visual image of this was stunning enough, but the sound was something I will never forget. There were a few seconds there when they were slamming into the door that it got a bit scary. I had a flat head screwdriver in my hand, just in case. If I was to meet my demise at the hands of an anger teen mob while defending a cowardly security guard, then so be it! But I wasn't going down without a fight. How fitting, I thought, that I should die with a screwdriver in my hand.
After about 10 minutes, the din of battle had finally died down. I stuck my head out the door, looked around, and made my way to the nearest exit, with the security guard right behind me.

A flat head screwdriver might penetrate deeper, but wouldn't a Phillips screwdriver act more like a hollow point and cause more damage?

From Knowledge it depends where you hit them, a local lad killed two polish people with a screwdriver. The points of contact were the side and forehead i think, one died suddenly the other after a few days.

I remember many years ago I was installing a Savin 770 in a brand new office....

We setup the machine in the shop first and tested, then drained out the toner tank of mixed toner and dispersant. Well we deliver the machine to the customers office and I proceed to poor the toner/dispersant back into the machine... When this hot looking secretary walked by and intentionally distracted my attention. The bottle slipped out of may hand, not thinking, I kicked up my knee to stop the bottle from falling onto the new carpeting. The bottle flew through the air...rolled across the floor spilling black toner/dispersant across the room...

Company had to pay for a paint job and replacement of the carpeting....and luckily for me I got to keep my job...

having to carry a copier up 4 flights of stairs, cos the lift was out of order & the salesman said the customer wanted it urgently, when we got it to the top, the customer said he had told the salesman he was refurbishing his office & wasn't ready for it, so it had to be carried down again, it appears the salesman wanted it installed before the end of the month, for his commission, since then i dont lift copiers & i always carry out a site visit a week before the install

This wasn't my oopsie, but a memorable one, nonetheless.

Back then the salesman did his own deliveries of tabletop machines. I got a call one afternoon, asking what I knew about Xerox. We'll, just a little more than nothing.

Apparently, after delivering the new machine the customer asked if we couldn't move his Xerox downstairs into the basement (it was a residence). It was bolted to the stand, so the salesmen had to take the whole thing assembled down some narrow basement stairs. About halfway down they discovered that the moving tabletop was not as securely attached as they thought. The engine and stand got to the bottom a lot faster than intended, and the poor distressed salesmen could only watch as it rolled end for end down the stairs. They did have a very good grip on the glass though, and that arrived safely at the bottom of the stairs. When I got there, the glass was sitting upon ... the rest of the copier.

To my great surprise, other than a few cosmetic dents, and a few tabletop photointerrupters snapped off, the machine was basically unscathed. $50 in parts and it was as good as ... as good as it was before the trip down the stairs. I don't remember what model Xerox it was, but I would definitely recommend it for hazardous duty. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
                      1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
                      2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
                      3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
                      4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
                      5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Delivery and installation of 19 brand spanking new MPC3501's. Delivery guys start unloading them off the back of the wagon, second to last one to come out has a large water stain on the box. Curiosity piqued, I remove the outer box to find a machine that looks like someone's had a go at it with a sledgehammer. Turns out the machine fell off the back of a tail lift and the delivery guys who shuttle the machines from the main depot to the trunk had dropped the machine, given the outer box a wipe to get the dirt off and sent it on it's merry (yet smashed) way to me.

I wish I'd have gotten a picture. EVERY cover was broken in some way, the side door was horribly twisted, the DF hinges had snapped and the scanner was bent so severly I think the machine would have been an immediate write off.
It's 106 miles to Chicago. We've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses.

                        Hit it.

Oh dear, did you get it working. A polish co worker done the same and started to dismantle everything to try fix the frame and scanner. He got taken of it and i got stung with it, i got it all back together but the copes were never the same

My brother was asked, by a client, to carry an HP 8100 up 3 flights of stairs by hand and by himself (no hand truck, dolly or stair climber). The client didn't want the printer on the hard wood floors on the main level. She was afraid it would scratch it. He told her he only delivered toner and she called his boss on him. Needless to say client won that argument. My brother didn't stay with that company long, too many issues with the boss.

Get ready to deliver a Sharp SF 8100. Winter time. Real slick pavement. Pushed on the moving cart to load into the van and my feet went backwards and the copier hit me smack in the face on the way down to the ground. Was able to buy a few panels and machine was delivered the next week. Could have been worst.
