    Re: Gun Control

3D printing, while a very nifty thing indeed, still has its limitations right now.

While a gun can be 3D printed and fired, the durability will be nothing compared to a solid steel gun and it'll likely shatter several rounds into business.

That doesn't make it any less alarming however... Staples is the first majour US retailer to carry 3D printers, at only the low cost of $1200.
We can rest assured knowing angry copy techs will never be able to go the way of the postman. Which of us has $1200 to spend on a 3D printer?

*Edit* I'll laugh so incredibly hard I may very well suffocate on the day I'm asked to service a 3D printer.

      Re: Gun Control

      Interesting read...

      <snip>
While gun crime fell dramatically over the last 20 years, crimes committed without guns fell just as fast.

Gottlieb had an explanation for that.

“All crime has basically been going down. And that’s because more people have firearms to protect themselves,” he said.

While firearm ownership rates have been relatively flat according to survey data, many more people now have licenses to carry guns on their person. The number of states with laws that give people a right to carry handguns outside of the home – known as “shall-issue concealed-carry laws” -- has increased dramatically over the last 20 years, going from 16 states in 1993 to 43 now.

Estimates show that guns are used in self-defense between 100,000 and 2 million times each year. Overlooking that, Gottlieb said, is the media’s biggest error.

“You never hear about defensive gun uses. Every time there’s a tragedy, there’s a call for gun control. But every time a gun is used in self defense – usually it doesn’t make the news, and you never hear a call for relaxing the gun laws so more people can defend themselves.”

I want that call. I want to look at the customer and say "I brought the program to replicate the parts we need to fix the printer, problem is, the printer won't work til we put the parts in, and we can't put them in til we print them, but we can't print them til we get the printer working......

I see this as a debate between people who place their faith in men and those who place their faith in guns. Historically the people who placed their faith in guns come out ahead. The people putting their faith in men are usually called peasants or victims.

by placing faith in men with guns is what we do with our police and military forces on a daily basis.
to have faith in your neighbor with a gun is something completely different, is he/she capable and knows when to and not to use their firearm.

If you own a gun you should take the time to get to the range a few times a month and practice at the least.
The best thing is to join USPSA or similar and you can get some better practice. I don't think you should rely
on the police to save you.

This is a great story to tie into your comment about relying on the police.

I partially agree... if you are unfamiliar with guns, go to the range and get acquainted as often as possible.

But if you are familiar with guns, there is no need in going to a range a few times a month, unless you just enjoy shooting.
