I feel the need to point out the text in the comic stating gun ownership is declining, not the sales of guns. They're selling yes, but the comic clearly states it's a decline in who owns the guns, not whether or not they're selling.

    Carry on.

I would have to agree with you post Newton tragedy. Sales are definitely up way up, manufacturers are adding more shifts to keep up with the high sudden demand for guns and ammo. Most products are premium priced.

The NRA has expanded its marketing to women and young adults to offset the traditional shrinking rural market as more people move to the cities.

I think the political cartoon depicts what was maybe a snapshot of the USA around Sept 2012.

I think the cartoon is saying is that per capita gun ownership is down, but, there are more multiple gun owners. So, sales may be up, but, they are all being bought by the same people.

Well, there's that. But also, when I've had my fill of dramatic nonsense, occasionally I'm not the shiniest mirror in the optics.

Texas mourners' plea: 'Chase 'em down, bring 'em to justice'

Kaufman County, Texas (CNN) -- The memorial service Thursday for a slain Texas prosecutor and his wife was somber, but one phrase made mourners erupt in applause.

"Chase 'em down. Go get 'em. Bring 'em to justice," said Chris Heisler, who led the service, drawing cheers and whistles from the crowd. "Take them out of the hole they come from."

The emotional plea came as investigators search for suspects in the unsolved killings of two prosecutors that have shaken this Texas county and drawn national attention.
Before the memorial, Texas Gov. Rick Perry made a similar appeal, calling the slayings "direct attacks on the core of our civil society" and announcing that authorities were offering a new reward of up to $100,000 for information leading to the arrest and indictment of the killers.

"These are heinous crimes, and they've affected not just Texans but people across the country who respect the rule of law," Perry told reporters.

District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife, Cynthia, died in a weekend shooting at their home, almost exactly two months after McLelland's chief felony prosecutor, Mark Hasse, died in a daytime shooting outside the county courthouse.

Maryland lawmakers pass strict gun control bill

Md. lawmakers pass strict gun control bill

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Maryland's already-strong gun laws will become among the strictest in the nation with a measure passed by the General Assembly Thursday, sending the bill to the Democratic governor who proposed the legislation in the aftermath of December's massacre at a Newtown, Conn., elementary school.

The state Senate voted 28-19 for final passage, agreeing to a number of changes the House of Delegates approved Wednesday.
The measure would require people who buy a handgun to submit fingerprints to state police, bans 45 types of assault weapons, and limits gun magazines to 10 bullets. It also addresses firearms access for the mentally ill.

Maryland will become the first state in nearly 20 years to require potential handgun buyers to submit fingerprints to state police. Only five other states have a similar requirement: Connecticut, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey.

Gun control advocates say the fingerprinting requirement will help keep guns away from criminals, because it will make people reluctant to buy firearms for those who are not allowed to have them. Opponents say the bill erodes Second Amendment rights and ultimately penalizes law-abiding citizens without focusing on lawbreakers.

Although the measure bans 45 types of assault weapons, people who own them now will be able to keep them. People who order the weapons before Oct. 1, when the law would take effect, also would be able to keep them.

Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller, who spoke of his own gun collection, noted that people will be able to keep the guns they have, even the assault weapons under the ban.

"It doesn't affect a single gun that anybody has," Miller, D-Calvert, said, noting shotguns and rifles are not affected.

As someone who doesn't own a gun presently, I don't see anything wrong with these requirements. It means that if you own those weapons on or before the specified date, you can keep them with no legal repercussions. It just means it will be more difficult to buy larger weapons, and will give legal gun owners an incentive to keep better watch on their firearms with the fingerprinting system. Granted a criminal who obtained their firearm by illegal means will not have to submit this fingerprint, they've already had their print taken in by the system - hence the need for an illegal purchase. It won't necessarily mean the end of illegal gun trades to criminals, but it will see a bit of a downturn in firearms readily available for those illegal trades from the path of a legal gun purchase down the chain of street command.

the number one question I have is " Why was the gun loaded in the first place? "
next question " Who was suppose to be watching the child, and did they attempt to stop him ? "

being an avid gun owner myself, I would never show any one a gun that was loaded and it sure as hell wouldn't be tossed on a bed for any one to pickup.
a lot of the accidental shootings are a result of ignorance and arrogance on behalf of the firearm owner.
as a deputy sheriff the owner should have been more responsible with his firearm.
the deputy should be held responsible for his own arrogant actions.

                            this is just my thoughts.
I have always taught my own children since they were big enough to stand, to be respectful and cautious of any firearm.
fortunately for that child, he has no concept of what he has done.
how will this damage the boy if and when this is explained to him when he is older?
how is this going to affect the relationship between the 2 families in the future?

It was the deputy's wife, she had put the gun on the bed and apparently in a matter of seconds the child had picked it up and fired. I would have to agree it was incredibly careless and stupid to put a loaded gun on the bed for anyone to pick up, especially with children present who would instinctively just try to make it work not knowing whether or not it will.

Those are very good questions. I imagine there would be some initial sour grapes between the 2 families, who knows if it will ever be resolved. Maybe it will become the next Hatfields and McCoys...
