    KM BizHub 423 Refurbishing - What to inspect/clean/lubricate/replace ?

    Hello All,

I recently picked up a KM BizHub 423 that I'm looking to refurbish for a friend.

I've done some initial testing and here are a few things I've noticed thus far:

    • Paper feeds through the paper trays and through the ADF just fine - no jams or misfeeds - even when duplex scanning/printing.
    • Prints work well, but have a horizontal band across them. Based on what I've read here, that is likely to be caused by worn fuser roller. The stripes I see on the page do align perfectly with the worn areas I see on the roller. I've already ordered a replacement to rebuild the fuser.
    • Faxes are very flakey. Sending faxes works most of the time, but it has issues receiving faxes reliably due to a 'protocol error'. I've also encountered a few B116 Errors when attempting to send faxes. I'm using the fax on a VoIP line (Spectrum Internet, Google Voice with an Obi-200 ATA device)

I've tracked down the Service Manual and have been looking through there, but I was hoping you could all help start me out with suggestions on what items to inspect/clean/lubricate/replace as part of the refurbishment to get it back into fighting shape! I was going to start new threads for the Fuser and Fax issues as I begin to work on those.

I'm new to working on MFPs but always like to learn new things (even on older tech) so at this point I don't know what I don't know, but I'm looking forward to the project and getting educated.

Let me know what you might need to know to help me out and I'll do my best to get you the information you need.

    Thanks for the help!

That machine is pretty simple. But the fax was really bad, especially with VoIp. Replace or rebuild the image unit. New drum, Blade, Developer. Cheap to rebuild. Check rear dev mag roller spacer for wear. There is aftermarket with bearing sold.

Reset counters before replacing image unit.

Only other thing with quality issues on that series can be upper fuser roller worn, most of the time from thermistor contact. Aftermarket roller & thermistors also cheap.

Lot of info in this forums archives about this series. Was a very poplar model at one time and many sold.

Just a word of advice, the tray 1 feed assy is NOT like the other 3 series machines. There is an extra sensor on the 423 that is not in the slower models so if you are swapping things around, just keep that in mind
You will phantom jam into oblivion.
      Good luck.
We know a thing or two because we've seen a thing or two.
      The medication helps though...

Thanks Copyman. That's exactly the kind of information I'm looking for. I'll do some research into rebuilding the image unit, and poke around the forums some more for other good nuggets of information on this model. I have no idea what a mag roller spacer is yet, but I'll figure it out

By the way, you're spot-on about the upper fuser roller - it's most worn where the thermistors make contact with the roller.

Thank you Synthohol. Always good to know where the booby-traps can be found. I hate to think of what kind of day you had when you figured that one out!

Actually, it's both feed units. The 423 uses direct optical sensors in the paper path where as the other models in the 3 series use actuators. Below is a snip-it from the service manual that talks about the tray 2 transport sensor, but it apples to tray 1 as well, I just didn't clip that part.

Thanks for the additional insider knowledge femaster. Interesting to see some of the differing design decisions between models of the same series.

What is the total count on that machine?

All depends on that. Its easy and cheap on these.

I had intended to include the counts in my original post. Thanks for the reminder.

The mechanical counter on the front panel next to the toner indicates: 384257

The counts from the web interface are below.

Any thoughts on why the counter on the device is significantly different from the total in the web interface?

                  Meter Counts:

                  Total Counter
                  242839
                  5348
                  244128
                  237382
                  Copy Counter
                  24234
                  0
                  Print Counter
                  218344
                  0
                  Scan / Fax Counter
                  261 234064
                  0 520

Ok the machine had a board swap somewhere in its history. The mechanical counter is probably correct.
Its a low count for that machine.

I would do the feed clutches, the registration clutch and registration bushings. Feed rollers where needed. An Image unit rebuild including a new developer unit depending on the condition or the seals. A transfer roller and fuser rebuild and that should be a refurb.

                    2 x feed clutches.
                    1 x registration clutch.
                    4 x registration bushings.
6 x red feed rollers. 2 included for DF.
1 x seperation assy for DF.
1 x dev tank. or 1 x DS roll kit if dev tank seals looks ok.
                    1 x developer.
                    1 x drum.
                    1 x cleaning blade.
                    1 x transfer roller.
                    1 x upper fuser roller.
                    1 x lower fuser roller.
1 x after market thermistor kits. As per previous good advise.

                    What am I missing?

What you can leave out for now.
Clutches and registration parts, feed roller, df parts if its not jamming.

Make a video showing the condition of the image unit and fuser to give more advice on what to leave for now.

Clip the spring for the transfer roller after the 2 tight turns.
                    Whatever

That is still a high meter for that machine and wouldn't put much time or parts into it. If the machine is passing a page replacing what I suggested in previous post will cost around $100 USD and get the machine working decent.

Oh yea one other common issue with this machine is the white cover under the ADF comes off. Clean off old glue and use heavy duty Velcro squares (home depot, lowes, etc)

Do your friend a favor who is going to end up with this machine, Unset fax in service and remove the fax.....

Oh yea one other common issue with this machine is the white cover under the ADF comes off. Clean off old glue and use heavy duty Velcro squares (home depot, lowes, etc)

Do your friend a favor who is going to end up with this machine, Unset fax in service and remove the fax.....

Allan, thanks for the exhaustive list of items I should be looking into. I really appreciate that! Since I'm not experiencing and jams I'll probably inspect some of those parts and replace if something looks worn out. Since the Fuser and Image unit are items both you and copyman suggested, I'll probably focus those first and evaluate the need for additional work after that.

Copyman - you're right; the white cover under the ADF is coming unstuck. Someone added some double-faced tape, but that too is failing. I have some heavy duty velcro and will remove the old stuff and put on the velcro. Thanks for that suggestion. It sounds like you have had some bad experiences with the Fax on these machines. That's too bad since my friend does a fair amount of Faxing (both receiving and sending). I saw a post here somewhere that suggested a firmware update for the B116 Fax errors. Would you know anything about that?

In general, should I be looking to update firmware on this machine to avoid some known issues, or is a firmware update like playing with fire? Firmware versions below, and thanks again to you both!:

It's worth a shot to update FW for the fax. If it works it works. If not can buy fax boards cheap on internet, ebay.

As for the fax probs try this:

                              nTech Mode / Fax / Communication / Protocol / V34 off - V29 on

                              nTech Mode / Fax / Communication / Timer1 / T1 = 90s

                              nTech Mode / Fax / Communication / Others / Cording Ability = MH / MR / MMR
                              nTech Mode / Fax / Modem / V17 Send Max Speed / RX+TX = V14.4600
