    [CQ] MOVING BLACK LINE

    Hi all,
I have a Ecosys 2040dw in the field that has "moving black line-itis." It's the typical "fuzzball on the charge wire" issue. Three times, I've cleaned the charge wire, and blew out the machine with canned air, inspected the drum and toner units, and have yet to find out why this moving black line keeps coming back. Each time I service this printer, service reports, event log, etc., all come out looking fine. However a couple of days goes by, and I get a repeat call on it.

Anyone out there seen this before?

    Thanks!

If I could figure out how to attach it to the thread, I have a print sample.

Generally it's easy to attach PDFs.

If you have cleaned the charge grid, how about cleaning the laser scanning glass? A "dust bunny" or toner could be blocking the laser from writing on the drum. Had a couple of units in this series exhibit black lines which was corrected by cleaning the LSU glass.

BTW.. using canned air to blow out mess can blow it into/on laser glass...onto boards and gearing causing you more headaches.. i suggest using a 3M vacuum or Stretch N Dust cloths. I have had to go back on too many machines where the lazy tech broke out canned air instead of using his COMPANY supplied vac. A few times the machine had to have boards replaced due to toner/dev powder shorting the board out. IF YOU INSIST on using canned air pull the component OUT and the use the canned air.
Just a hint from an OLDER tech.

                  Agreed!

I've seen canned air, or worst compressed air at high psi, send dust and toner into crevasses, creating much worse issues. When the carcass is empty, then yes compressed air can be used. Blasting dirt INTO the laser and sensors only makes things worse.

If it's white, air is alright. If it's black, bring out the vac.

I find paper dust gets pretty well atomized with air but blowing toner will kill your paper path for many copies to come.

And I have found that is optics will merely relocate the offending dust or lint to a different location. Stretch N Dust cloths are the best to remove them without leaving lint.

The line moves, which tells me there's a dust bunny hopping around in the machine somewhere. Thanks for all the suggestions and advice.

This series seems to be prone for dirt on the charging grid. Very little is enough for this output.
