Kyocera 6525 not detecting correct size original

Hey all, I have a machine here that intermittently will detect the wrong size only when using the glass (feeders use their own detection) Customer states when they put letter size on the glass, sometimes it will say it's another size. They say when it occurs it usually asks for legal, but the one time it did it for me it asked for ledger (on a letter size original), after that I couldn't duplicate it again. Very intermittent. I tried putting all the different sizes on the glass and they all came up correct, so something is just slightly flakey. There doesn't seem to be a sensitivity adjustment for the paper size detecting sensors. Machine is in the same location it has always been with the same overhead lights shining down in the office, so I don't think that has anything to do with it. Any ideas? tia.

I had similar issues years ago on a Toshiba and it was a slight haziness on the underside of the scan glass that caused it. Whip off the glass and give all the optics a good clean as well as the sensors.

the problem is that there is no solution.
you have to create a program saying that the original format is A4 vertical

Check the physical location of the machine.

I had the same sporadic issue a while back, turned out it only happened in the mid/late afternoon when the sun got low enough to shine directly onto the copier. This casued the size sensor to get confused. We moved the copier to where the sun didnt shine on it and never had the issue again.

Had this happen yesterday on a 3252. Popped the glass off, cleaned it, the mirrors, lens, and CCD. No more problem.

The DP open/close sensor is probably blocked due to a problem with the spring return of the reading guide (The white bar that sits above the slit glass when the DP is closed).

The sensor itself is hard to get to but you can remove or replace the reading guide and springs easily. The actuator is on the reading guide, that's where the problem would be.

Maintenance mode u244 to check the state of the sensor while opening and closing the feeder.

I think this might have been the closest thing to the problem. I swapped out the feeder with a better one and problem seems to have gone away. These feeders tend to warp with age being made almost exclusively out of plastic. I've had to shim up the right side hinge with some folded paper on a few of them to get them to close properly as they age. Looks like on this one it had to be shimmed too much and was causing the occasional misreading of the original on the glass. A good feeder will close flat every time, but as they age I don't see any other option but to shim up a little bit. These aren't the best feeders in the world, especially with that expensive left hinge having to be replaced so often and the plastic it screws into becoming brittle and falling apart, no other option but to swap out feeders and I don't think you can order a new one by itself anymore. I've just about run out of good used ones.

Ahahah, that was not even intentional!

Somedays you do get those call outs, either the machine or the client could do with a long walk off a short loading bay.
