I've got a wierd one, the 3000 sheet finisher tray A on a KM5050i copier will drop down about a third of the way and go into c8140 code after the print key is pressed. The upper and lower limit sensors are working and I swapped out the sorter pwb and it still does it. When you go into staple mode the sorter works perfectly, it jogs down as packetts come out of the finisher!

That's probably what I would have tried too.
With the weird behavior (it should never have to home out tray A to the bottom), I would reload firmware next. If that doesn't help, the only other logical choice is the MFPs engine controller.
I don't suppose you have another DF-710 that you can attach for testing purposes? =^..^=If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Obviously that signature line is not for you then.
This is what the manual suggests:
DF-710 Main Tray Problem. Main tray is not detected in not detected by main tray top limit detection sensor or main tray capacity detection sensor within 20 sec of ascending. Main tray upper limit detection sensor or main tray load detection sensor is not detected as Off within 20 sec of main tray descending. Main tray lower limit detection sensor is not detected as On within 20 sec of main tray descending. Main tray upper limit detection sensor or main tray load detection sensor remain on for 2 sec or more during main tray ascent.
1) Reseat YC6 @ finisher main PWB & connector for main tray motor, 2) Pinout harnass, 3) Replace main tray upper & lower limit detection switches & main tray load detection sensor, 4) Repl main tray motor, 5) Repl finisher main PWB.
You must know that this error must be reset in sim 906 Partial Reset, or you wouldn't have gotten this far.
I'm sticking with the engine controller suggestion. And I'm guessing you don't have another finisher to try on.If you'd like a serious answer to your request:

What results do you get from sim 240, Finisher Motor, Tray Motor (MTM)?If you'd like a serious answer to your request:

i think this is the one i fought for a bit.
go into sort mode, see if the fingers drop when sorting (on the main tray). if they dont drop and hold the paper, there is a spring broke on the solenoid that pulls the fingers down. if the fingers dont drop, it errors out.
the spring is on the backside of the finisher. pull the main tray out and see where the fingers are located. on the back side you should see a solenoid below that end, there should be a spring attached. i have had two of these break lately.Comment

All sort functions are working properly in sim mode . The paper never gets to the sorter! when you hit the print button the A tray drops about a third of the way down and then errors out without ever feeding or printing paper!Comment

Wow, that is a lot of exclaimation points. So far you've shot down all my suggestions. Good work.
I'm trying to help you work through this, and I'm doing all the thinking. When you're ready to relax and participate, let me know.If you'd like a serious answer to your request:

Finisher problem
Try this... Look / see if the light and or receiver at the top of the main tray is out of alignment. They must see each other to keep the tray at its highest point. Had one that the light from window triggered the sensor, sorter thought that it had to much paper on tray, went down trying to accept more stock. Hope that helps... RussComment

Re: KM 5050i Sorter Tray A Problem
Hello,
I have the same problem with a KM5050 with a DF-710.
I had multiple times c8140. i restart and can't select "tray A" anymore.
Only when i execute U906 i can use it for about 5-10minutes then again c8140...
Friday i go again to this client with the required sensors, tray motor and main pwb from another DF-710 (like seen in manual).
I don't believe in F/W update because it always worked before without update...
Anyone any idea or experience about this issue??
Thanks in advance.Comment

Re: KM 5050i Sorter Tray A Problem
As an earlier poster said.....check the spring on the solenoid that operates the clamp fingers in the output tray A. These are the fingers that would hold one set in position while the next set is outputted.
The spring will break causing a failure in the linkage between solenoid and finger mechanism. If the fingers don't move into the down position, you get a failure code.
Firmware updates are a good idea even when not solving an obvious problem.Comment
