    J81 jams on Harrier (CS-6030/CS-8080)

I discovered this one only through blind stubbornness. I have a feeling it's probably pretty common.

When the paper leaves the fuser it is guided down to the duplex tray to be inverted for face down delivery. The feedshift gate (just past the fuser) hits a flanged stop in the front frame. That stop has a foam sound damping pad which becomes sticky as a result age and heat from the fuser.

There is no return spring on that gate, just gravity, so when the pad gets sticky it delays the dropping of the gate. See below:

Just like on some solenoids, just scrape off the pad and apply black tape to damp the sound. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Good info. Reminds me of the Sharp FN-6 finisher. They came out with an updated cushion with a mylar on top of the cushion for the exact same thing that you found.
    Thanks !!
    Hope that helps !

Hey, I remember that! I had one at a lawyers office doing that. IIRC in those situations I would separate the 5 layers (mylar, two-sided tape, rubber pad, two-sided tape, mount), clean off any adhesive, then use superglue to substitute for the two-sided tape. The tape would tend to slide off the other surface, but superglue held firm. =^..^=

Oh wait, that was a Canon finisher, but same effect.

There was a QA on this problem, they came out with a new cushion. I replaced it on all my 6030 and 8030's, and along with lowering the fixing speed this has resolved a lot of duplex jamming issues. Service Bulletin #: 8380/ 2FB-0092

              Update:
Same jam code J81, different cause.

The right duplex guide (clear plastic) is broken at the front post. As a result, the cover shifts to the back binding the feed switch that pokes up through a hole in the guide. Also the top guide drops at the front without the support of the post, laying right on top of the lower guide.

When 11" wide paper is inverted for face-down printing to the finisher, the paper is creased at the front while passing through the middle tray, then it snags on the feedshift gate on the way out. This may have been the original/main problem from the first visit.
