can anyone tell me what this error relates to?

Your scanner lock-down is engaged. It's located under the optic area at the front left corner.

would this cause the machine to make a noise when trying to copy? also im looking for a good sharp parts dealer any suggestions?

L1-00 means the scanner never left the home position sensor. As was stated, the most common problem was inadvertantly locking the scanner. You can run the scanner in 1-1, or just move it with your hand.

Tmaged is right - this happened many times to me, I phone troubleshoot it. Sometimes it takes cleaning and oiling the metal rod the scanner rides on (rear fram side). Good luck.

If the machine is in a nice, clean environment, remove the lock-down clip totally..... you will never have this issue again. It only leaves a small hole on the underside of the scanner that no-one will even notice..... little chance of dust entering scanner unit if in a good environment. Your choice. Most machines here in Australia seem to have them removed during run-up. Those that dont, will eventually have this error.

If the trouble L1 still occurs, then it will be on the main PWB. There's a technical bulletin from Sharp for the repair on this particular trouble.
