    Got small hands?????

I had to go to my mechanic this week. While he was changing my oil I was waiting in the gas station and the other guys in there (looked like other mechanics, i guess) asked me what i do. I told them and they asked to see my hands. It has been my experience that most techs have small hands and I said so. They made some pretty bad jokes about guys with small hands and I had to defend you guys and put them in their place. But it made me wonder if it is really true or just all my fellow tech friends have small hands. Do you have small hands?

    Not really.

You know what they say it means when you have big hands and big feet?

Nope I have huge grave diggers.

The other techs I work with are always breaking things like corona wires etc.
But no problem here, rock steady hand-to-eye coordination.

I guess I'm the exception, too. Some techs can get to the developing drive gear on the Sharp BC320 on the inner rear frame, but my large hands and arms stop me just past the wrist.

It was a great opportunity to talk to the 100lb secretary with the skinny arms: "Hey, do you see that gear? Do you think that you could reach it?"

        =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
        1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
        2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
        3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
        4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
        5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

LOL...well maybe they're all just printer techs. I know what they say about big feet (I think that one is true). never heard anything about big hands.

Big hands here. I noticed you have a guitar theme going on, so I would think that having small hands would be an advantage when fretting a guitar (as long as your fingers are not short). I used to play a guitar, but I can't get my fat fingers around the neck anymore

UG!! Nothing more fun than trying to put springs on separators, and the end of your pliers or hemostats won't close all the way so you try to pick the tiny spring with your big ass fingers and then watch as it shoots across the room as you try to put it on. Then you get to use your big hands to sweep back and forth across the carpet trying to find the only spring you have that size, getting jabbed and stuck with bits of broken staples while people ask smart questions like "Did you loose something?", to which you can reply "No, I am getting ready for the bottle of tequila I am going to have to drink after I finish this week!" .....Ah, good times, good times...

lol...I nearly fell on the floor laughing. Only because I know what you mean. I had a job before that required a lot of in-shop after hours fuser rebuilding (we do that instead of trying to rebuild one in the field - less headaches. Of course, we had contracts with only 4 different kinds of machines, so we rebuilt a lot of the same kinds and kept them in inventory. The guys with the big fingers always had trouble with the picker finger springs. I could almost visualize you fixthecopier. lol. I used to do all the separation assemblies for the guys while they did the rollers. I always have trouble with the pressure springs on some of the old fusers (like some of the Toshiba's that you had to fix while half your body is in the machine!) I didnt have enough strength in my hands to put the pressure springs on like the guys. Had to divise my own method and use a big flat blade screwdriver like a lever with one hand and my duckbills in the other to get the spring on. I was a fixer sandwich screaming in 3 languages when I dropped a spring or ring down in the bottom.

I can palm a basketball, so I don't think my hands are too small.
And Blackcat,I can reach the DV gears on a C260 from the transfer belt area since I have long arms.
I can also lick her bellybutton from the inside, but that's for another day !
                    Hope that helps !

Sometimes when u have a "bad day" and at the end of it u have to fix fuzer assy of bizhub 162-3. If anyone have exp. whit this machines then u know what am I saying. U have to push ur hand threw small hole designed for "japan class people" whit ur EU-USA hand and grab the connector and seperate it while ur both hands are in it....afcorse as i mentioned...EU-USA hand could do that if u practice magic since only half of one will go thru the hole...Afcorse that hole have sharp edges and afcorse u get what u deserve

Small hands are nice for getting into the old machines that clamshell open, cause it always seems the fuser unit is on the side that pivots, wich has the least room to get your hands into, the old SF 2116/2118 are some examples of this.
The DV gears on the BC machines I get to them the way the T/B shows, I use a little pair of needle nose to reach up and grab the gear, and same pair to install the washer and new gears.
Try changing feed rollers in a AR 275 on the upper feed section with out pulling the LSU out, it can be done, but you need short, short stubby screwdriver and some small hands, no I dont, not at 6'00" and 280 Lb, I got pretty good size hands.
T/S wires, good glasses and steady hands.

yeah, I play guitar, but i never have time to play anymore. Its frustrating to say the least. My hands are not small for a woman, but in comparison with you guys they are and my fingers are long and skinny. Separation springs are fun to me, not when I drop them though.

Maybe you folks haven't heard, but they have this new thing, its called magnetism. It's really cool too, you touch certain metal objects and voila! it sticks to it. I've got one on the end of an extendable (sp?)probe. Works great!
Something else you could use, although a bit extreme is a toner vacuum. Just sweep it across the floor, suck it up, then clean the filter. Of course you'll have to tear the filter apart to clean it, but hey I did say it was a tad extreme.

ooohhh yeah! I call it "using the force" (Star Wars humor). I have a special long #2 phillips for just such occasions and I do NOT let anyone else use it without permission. You can ask my boss (not the supervisor either, the owner of the company). I verbally abused him and chased him into the office to give him another one instead of that one. The other ones just dont feel right, handle is too big on the others. Guys with big hands like them, but not me.

I have been known to drag a magnetic dish (yes I carry one in my toolcase) when I go onsite to pick up those pesky sep. springs. You might want to try that one Fixthecopier. Its a lot easier. LOL. Still laughing about the staples thing. I can just see that happening!
