I stand corrected... the title you used was clickbaity... and concerning the question of to open or not to open... open... no question... people will die... deal with it... but if the economy stops... we will all wish we were dead... most people don't realize we are just one step removed from the jungle... civility is not normal for the majority of humans... its only normal if people can get what they want...
and we don't have a limitless supply of cash... socialism is fun to try but not to live...
look its like Margaret Thatcher once said that "The trouble with Socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money." Margaret Thatcher on Socialism
... if you read the news piece, therein lies the problem with utilitarianism that you seem to be a supporter of.
Utilitarianism does effect not all aspects of society equally. Poor people, people of colour and people of minorities tend to be employed in those jobs in society that are at much higher risk of catching COVID-19. Bus drivers, subway workers, garbage collectors, food service employers, taxi drivers, etc. Their death rates will be much higher, as is already the proven case with black people, than white people.
Why should white people be placed at less risk than black people for economic reasons? White people are likely not even to be the majority of people in the USA by the 2030s.

And how exactly is the US system better than any other? It isn't like they are not running deficits, or heavily in debt as a nation.
have you ever heard of the right to try bill Trump signs "right to try" bill today – Will it help terminally ill patients get access to life-saving drugs? - CBS News
this bill that people have been fighting for is a bill that would allow terminally ill patients or those that have tried everything else the right to try drugs that are promising even if they are not approved by the fda... in many cases what that means is that the drugs efficacy is known because its used in other countries for certain treatments but for one reason or another its not allowed here... because it does not meet fda standards or it has not met other requirements... chief among which is it costs a lot of money to get a drug fda approved and a lot of drug companies just would prefer to stay profitable and sell other places than pay extortion fees...
anyway the point is that people want the right to try... they are stuck between a rock and a hard place and they are willing to do what it takes to make their last moments on earth longer and they will take the risk of it being shorter...
for them govt intervention assures them of an earlier and sometimes needlessly painful death...
sounds familiar...
most people of color... hell people period... don't care about all this hoopla over covid 19...
have you forgotten the story I published where most everyone that went on a ventilator in new york died...
to most common joes that means the hospital killed them...
most would say... I will take my chances with the virus... certain death going to the hospital or take my chances working, catching virus and dying quickly...
most would take the slim of life...
they don't want the govt to help them into an early grave...
remember... american mindset... govt screws up everything they touch... and if it benefits anyone its the well to do...
most people want to be involved with govt as little as possible...
they just want to work... provide for their kids and be left alone...
because as soon as you bring govt into the picture...
govt inevitably screws things up...
consider the indian reservations in america... it was not until the indians began to try to do things for themselves their lot began to improve...
consider the state of science in america... due to govt intervention... science is about consensus not scientific method... and if you disagree with the consensus you are out... lab results be darned... any new ideas... are crushed... because it could upset funding models...
consider the war on poverty... poverty was decreasing and then it was made a social program and its now an institution and growing...
now a govt with that kind of track record you are going to trust with health...
ok... just to show you how laughable that is...
what agency do you think is going to be put in charge of this covid 19 thing if it gets really bad...
the va... yes you heard me right... I can't even say it without cursing...
why is this... lets not talk about the va... veterans administration... bile rising in my mouth...
lets just talk about govt mindset...
we have to contrast this with the typical mindset of the guy on the street...
govt we call public sector
guy on street private sector...
govt administrators -- public sector... they have to spend every dime they get to justify that they need more funds... and so they can for raises and expansion and such not to mention get promotion... and more often than not its got some kind of union component... so often these kind of workers don't care about john q public... he does not affect their job...
guy on the street, common business, private sector... you are rewarded for providing quality service at a quality price... and the better you do... the more your customer base grows... a worker must show skill, merit... heck something to justify his existence... he wont keep a job if he causes grief...
now after knowing all that... you think I would trust said govt with my wallet... you must be out of your living mind...
govt only cares about one thing... how to make govt bigger... and how to sink their claws deeper into your wallet...
govt may have made a sock puppet out of me... but I have my dignity...
I prefer to go out on my own terms...
not wasting away in an adhoc prison...
or as some would say... a guilded cage...

... an inspirational song for all of the people who do the jobs that keep society functioning during COVID-19. It includes healthcare, food services, transportation ,police services, municipal workers and even copier techs !
N25an, Hell Yeah.
Was just talking about the ‘right to try’ thing with my shop buddies. Consensus was, “If it might help me live, it’s worth the risk. What’s the alternative.....? You guessed it! Death.
... or less than death like paralysis, loss of vision, urinary failure, seizures, migraines, etc leaving you financially ruined for the remainder of your life.
I would stick with the medical professionals rather than the advice of Doctor Trump, the man who can never admit that he was wrong nor believe in science that is not convenient for the story he is pitching that day.
Remember, once you are no longer of value to President Trump, he never knew you.
in many cases, even your own doctor wants to try the drugs that the fda has blocked... those who are financially capable go to other countries as the fda workaround... so most of the time it isn't an issue of not being bad medicine but being cash strapped... because by the time a lot of people get to this point... after following proper medical regimen they well broke... and its usually at this point the doctor brings them an option that works but is beyond the fda and his ability to help them with... its the american way...
bless you if you have a doctor that recommends something like this first... when you are not cash strapped...
one thing I have learned in my life...
is never trust doctors...
because they have a financial interest...
go get a second opinion and research it...
they will prescribe you drugs that will kill you...
they will recommend procedures that they can do...
not necessarily whats best...
never ever ever ever... trust a professional...
listen carefully...
and then go research for yourself...
remember most of science today is consensus...
so what you will hear from most doctors is the safest opinion...
not necessarily the best options...
in many cases, its not in their best interests to tell you...
the truth...
either financially or legally...

doctors in america don't make decisions based on limited medical resources... they make decisions based on if you can pay...
states and municipalities are not the issues... governors and mayors are worried about being re-elected...
so they are considering whats in their financial best interests vs their future political prospects vs legal ramifications if they are wrong...
while the common guy just wants to get back to work...
and put this idiotic scenario behind them...

The question is from a famous social experiment.
Doctors right now across America are making similar life and death decisions based upon what limited medical resources they have to allocate across multiple patients.
Some states and municipalities are trying to decide if it is safe to reopen their economies while at the same time deeming a certain number of deaths because of that decision is acceptable.
