As long as "what if" statements are considered valid on the topic of gun control, the theorists win. You can say "what if" until you're blue in the face to justify it, but in reality that's no different from a "what if" discussing what you would do with lottery winnings.

There ARE laws that say mentally ill persons may not have guns, but guess what - there are laws saying you can't have LSD too. Laws don't mean squat to anyone except those that are inclined to obey them, and that includes LEGAL gun owners. There is a hue and cry to do something about guns, but not the mental illness that drives 99% of these shootings. Gun control is the easy way out, but won't fix the problem.

More people die in cars than by guns. Maybe we should ban cars.
A car, a knife, a club, bare hands... All lethal when possessed by the wrong person.

I'm sorry but that is a terrible attitude. If this happens you do not take it into your own hands to resolve the issue, that is why there is law enforcement.

I agree the ability to protect yourself and family from other gun wielding loonies is your right. But to use it as a threat or leverage over someone is appalling. Sometimes the threat of a gun to an assailant is enough to send them running. To fire first and think second is the attitude I fear too many people hold. And they call it self defence.

You will never remove guns from the USA as it is already integrated into society. With that in mind, gun crimes should receive the heaviest punishment possible to discourage criminals (hearing these stories of plea bargains and reduced sentences makes me sick). Yes someone can attack you with a knife, but a gun has one purpose to kill again and again from range. It's lethality is 100x that of a manual weapon.

I'm confused as to why the licensing laws allow almost anyone to have a firearm. Is there no mental screening processes or yearly reviews of weaponry?

I leave with this... If someone intends to shoot you, they will and all owning a gun does is allow you to shoot them back.

Re "fixthecopiers" post of three days ago describing the Pew Centers research into gun violence and the conclusion that it decreasing. If one actually reads the 63 page report, the data only covers up to 2010. The last three years of gun violence in America was not analyzed.

I was in Moncton, New Brunswick during the three days of the City's total lock down after the long gun deaths of three RCMP officers plus the wounding of two other officers. Hotels, restaurants and all commercial businesses were shut down. All schools and universities were closed. All residents were asked to stay home with their doors locked. City buses, Brinks armored trucks and commercial tractor trailers were were used to block City streets and obstruct lines of fire during the manhunt. This tragic event was the second largest slaying of police officers in Canadian history. One of the officers killed had a very young family. Moncton (144k people) has not had a single homicide in two years.

Allan Legere, the "Monster of the Miramichi" was incorrectly described in the earlier post as murdering twenty people. In reality he murdered five. He is still in a Montreal "super max" prison with no chance of parole.

There is only one reason for the gun debate. It is because governments fear an armed populace. Armed free men are the only thing between tyrants and power. Disarm free men and tyrants can have their way.

I haven't partaken much in this discussion because of the sensitive nature of those who hold these rights very dear to their hearts; but to make a joke that Canada is too violent for having 1 mentally ill person going on a cop killing spree is a bit overboard. How many widely publicized shootings have there been in the US within the last few months alone?

Roger Elliot was a very recent case, who killed and injured more than the Moncton, NB shooter. Just pointing out facts here... Carry on.

New Brunswick , Canada, armed nut job saleserviceguy killing 6 people so far. 12 gauge shotgun and a sniper rifle. Canada is such a peaceful country. How could this happen. Only crazy people from the U.S. kill with guns. Here is another one for you. Salesserviceguy back in 1986 kills 20 people and is put in prison , escapes and kills 7 more. His real name is Adam Legere. Serviving life in Prison in Montreal. He must have escaped again tho.I'm not going to Canada. To violent.
I didn't think there were any people who would think that some mentally ill lunatic with a gun killing three human beings, wherever it happened, was joke worthy.
But, Mr Bill seems to think it is. So sad.
