I try to make sure that I am positioned to where they o away from my body. Of course that means if they do go flying it is across the room never to be seen again.Comment

Re: The random thought thread
You drop a screw, or an e-clip launches, etc., and it can land one of two ways - right there in plain view where you hardly have to move to find it, or never to be found no matter how hard you look. Good Bounce, Bad Bounce. My kids can read me when I get home - "Bad Bounce day today, Dad?" Also have a tackle box of spare screws, clips, rings, charge terminals, etc. At least if it takes a bad bounce, I have a solid chance of having a replacement.Comment

Re: The random thought thread
They have already been invented. I've had one for years. They come in handy at times. I've saved my self some major hours of re-work by being able to use the extension between narrow openings/gears and covers to re-fit forgotten E-clips.
See the attached image. The E-clip removal point of this tool has a retainer tab broken off but it still works fine, you just have to hold the e-clip with your finger when extracting. The refit side works well to this day. This tool is nearly 30 years old.

Re: The random thought thread
If I'm working on top of the machine (where I try to do most of my work, at my knees insistance), I close as many covers as possible. I try to find all my lost items as well, if I think it might be around a board or moving parts, I'll dig a little harder, maybe even try to shake the machine, but sometimes you just can't find 'em, in which case a spare is a nice thing to have.Comment

The sad thing is that now a lot of these clips are made of nylon/plastic and do not fit into a tool like this due to a small tab on them . Some of these can be removed and re-installed with forceps ."The Serenity Prayer" . . .
God grant me the serenity to accept stupid people , the courage to not waste my time and energy on them , and the wisdom to know that I cannot fix STUPID .Comment

Re: The random thought thread
I remember those ... we even had one ( used on typewriters mostly ) that had a holder for the E-Clip and it had a button on top to press that pushed the clip on. No hook to remove the clip though.

I'd be interested in seeing what you have in mind. I've developed a few tools myself and the idea alone is enough. While you're at it can you develop a plastic magnet? =^..^=If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Yeah, the hemostats work nicely on the plastic ones. But since they're non-ferrous the magnet isn't of much use if you drop it.

I like the simplicity of the design in previous picture. I had in mind a type of bend nose pliers or calliper/mastic gun / wire stripper mechanism application. But it seems overcomplicated comparing to the existing one.
I think I'll try to make a prototype over christmas time extended holiday
Plastic magnet/attract tool exists"Well processed blue tag at the end of a screw driver" or piece of two-sided tape
tape always works .

I've wrecked at least three of those, and the latter downside is what usually dooms that type of tool in my experience.Comment
