We have some software we use and a verification service that blocks registrations from know spammers by looking at IP, usernames, email and other indicators and it is usually pretty effective but the past few weeks have been crazy.

What a pain in the ass. I'm looking at a few new spam prevention tools so hopefully we can slow it down a little bit.
Man, I'm so glad you're healthy and back!
It's about time to point a few moderators of this site...there are some qualified volunteers available.

Aneurysm, glad you are back and doing well.

Please consider the possibility assigning a couple of long time and reliable members to assist you in the administration of this site.

I am sure there are many here that are qualified and have the piratical experience needed and would volunteer their time to help.

          Just a thought.

xda forums has a good approach to spam. They have a spam reporting thread where you post the link to the spammers profile and moderators then delete the profile. This way you would only need a couple of moderators, preferably on the other side of the planet from each other, to make up for time differences.

Only problem with that idea is that our sole moderator is only a part time moderator, and all attempts to convince him that we need at least 1 more have fallen on deaf ears.

All this good but will work with actually active moderators/admins.
With our only one Aneurysm who's last activity in the forum is marked as '2 weeks ago' that ain't gonna happen soon. We're running in circles about having few moderators from very long time and it's obvious that ain't gonna happen soon too 🤣

By the end of the day it's what it's and I'm happy we have it.

Actually he s the one and only administrator. About 4 years ago he was in the process of vetting some moderators. Then the pandemic hit. Should he ever ask, I have a list of at least a dozen potential moderators shoud he ever ask for suggestions. It includes people from the US, Canada, Europe, Africa and Australia.

I think it may have a lot to do cost. It is now the last day of the month and contributions are at 96% of the goal. If moderators are going to want a stipend for their service then the site is going to need more income. I wonder how many would be willing to act as moderators for free or to contribute any stipend back to the site. Maybe if we had an additional admin or 2, we might be able to generate additional advertising revenue. I have a feeling that advertising requests go to the same message box as spam reports and it fills up very quickly with Aneurysm not having time to be here on a daily basis. He does have his own business to rum and family to take care of n the New York City area.

One point to mention, don't respond / post abuse on the spammers post this only bumps them up. Simply ignore them.

Yes, slip of the fingers, I mean administrator, we have no actual moderators. I remember from previous conversations about the list you made. I do hope that he considers the search again, as this place could use at least one person that comes around every couple days.

Also do not click the link in their post. Man times the link has an embedded identifier and they get pad based on the number of clicks their post generate, purchase or no purchase.

What are we going to do when the site is down for technical reasons and the moderator is not available due to a health issue or worse.....?

I am willing to spend yearly a considerable good contribution to ensure an always functional site moderated by more than one person.
