    Canon NP6545 sorter error code E540

    Customer had gotten this system 2 weeks ago and it was working okay then getting E524 during warmup cycle. I notice that the sorter was not alligned properly with machine and also there was a plastic flange at front side of sorter that was out of track . The machine was not getting to the point where the stapler goes to home position.
    After putting the flange in the track the machne went past the stapler movement to home position but then getting E540 when bin motor was about to turn.it looked like it would just barely start to turn and then the code.
    I understand that this error code also poseses a detail or sub-code of 51 to 55. How do I get that as I did not see how to display it in the manual. Any help is very much appreciated. This my first call on this model.
    I temporarily disconnected the sorter so custome rcan use machine. Frank

      I don't recall seeing sub codes for the NP series. But the E-540 is a bin shift error. Usually when I got them it was due to the bins not being properly aligned. Try moving them by hand and see if they are binding. Look at the bins where the paper comes out and see if the top bin is relatively even across the top. I use the paper exit as a reference. There is a lower limit switch and if the bins are too low they will not shift up. I am not sure if that would cause an E 540 or not. You can turn the bins by hand and shift them up so they are off the switch. I have work on many of these, but it has been a few years since I have worked on the NP series. I will help if you have more questions. I hope this helps put you in the right direction. One thing to keep in mind with that machine. That series of sorters would often pop a code for what didn't happen, but the problem often turned out to be that the previous function didn't happen and so it called for the code on what it was waiting for. for example an E-532(stapler shift) would come up or a 510(sorter feed motor) and they would be because the operation unit didn't shift up.

              A tech friend of mine who is nearby was also called by the customer and he was there after me. My friend called to let me know that the sorte was damaged that sorter would need replacement as I guess it was some kind of frame damage. We didn't get into details.
              I suggested we try Greater Philadelphia an off-lease company with warehouse of machines and accessories. I got a good price on same sorter and we agreed to do a duet on this one. Again, thanks for the help. Frank

                  It's common on these finishers for paper jams to get speared on the projections at the entrance to the bins. There is a set of arrow buttons allowing the user to raise or lower the bins as needed to unspear the finisher jams.

                  Most users don't have a clue how to do this. What they usually do is jam their hands between the narrow gap between the bins and tear the paper to little shredded bits. Oh, and break off the pins that align the bins to the cam.

                  The pins I'm talking about are attached to the bins (or supposed to be), and the user usually busts up 4 or 5 of these at a time. It's not a major deal to change the bins. You just take off the front and back covers, lay the finisher down on it's right side, remove the lift cams & wiring, and slide out the whole bin assembly.

                  Also keep in mind that these bins break very easily in shipping also. We had a mortality rate of 25% just in shipping, so if you need four bins, order 5. Most likely one will arrive broken.

                  If the bins are intact, keep in mind that the bevel gears that drive the cams from the bottom can break, and jump teeth. Make sure these are meshing well, both front and back.

                      To add to what Blackcat has said, the bevel gears do get out of time, due to binds, and you may have to retime the front shaft to the rear one. Pay close attention to the lead edge on the lift cams. The lead edges of both the front and rear lift cams should engage the bin lift rollers (on the pins he mentioned), at the same time, so the bins lift evenly.

                          That's funny that you should say that. I was just thinking that 20 bin sorters suck.

                              Sometimes a bin roller will just jump off the cam rail and get stuck and bind up immediately. If so just pull cam back and realign. Pretty simple job.

                                  Latest is I spoke to customer and he has decided he does not want to put a lot of money into the sorter. Between myself + friend he paid $420( includes mini-Pm my friend did) and still has non-working disconnected sorter.
                                  He said he took sorter to his head office(machine is at construction job-site) . I suspect that when my friend told him he needed to replace sorter that he may have taken it to someone who offered to look at it for free or low-priced evaluation.
                                  I mentioned he could get another (same model) for about$800 with a warranty but he was negative. Frank
