    [Misc] SW Switches and Engine FW Switches

    Looking through some threads here and I have seen many an instance of where a SW switch is mentioned that has no information whatsoever in the Service manual for the device. Example I saw was a mention of SW 210 to do with Status Notifications.
    In the 250i Service manual this switch is not detailed at all, it jumps from 206 - Coverage counter to 226 - Fax Mis-send Prevention.

    Another example I have was for the 8Series machines.
    If you go into the service manual and go to the Engine FW DipSw list and look at switches 37 and 38 they both say "Not Used". However, there was a bulletin released to do with excessive fuser bearing wear for this machine and lo and behold these 2 switches control Polygon Motor, Fuser and Fan control during standby.

    Why do the service manuals, which are only accesible to us techs, not give us the full list, and has anyone complied a full list of what the switches do based on TIB releases?

    I have started a spreadsheet myself to track all of this missing info.

    Just a curious thought for discussion on a quiet Friday afternoon.

      Right. I had a C758 (I think) that would not accept a new drum. The life counter would not reset. Finally KM gave me a SW to try, and it worked! And I promptly forgot it.
      Since then I keep a list. I wish there were a list... someone should collaborate on that! lol

          There are multiple versions of service manuals. There's the version you and I see, then there's the version the hotline sees, then there's the version that the engineers use. And when you accidentally figure out something that you're not supposed to, it comes out in a bulletin a week later. "See? It was just released!"
          If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
          1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
          2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
          3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
          4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
          5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

              Accurate. When I worked with Sharp, it was the same way, they would deny something until it was released in a TB.

                  Service manual even latest is vague of full list of switches. They are reserved for KMI engineering support and I believe they are developed in motion sometimes.

                      There was an attempt at one point to list them all. Problem is, some are machine specific.

                      Worked in IT for 12 years from Helpdesk up to System Administrator. Now working as the IT Manager at a copier company for the last 4 years.

                          Funny the Jap's will never admit to a issue until they have solution for it.

                          As the for the soft switches. Just a thought but not sure, do they add switches & firmware as needed with a bulletin for specific issues that arise after production? Maybe this is why there are unused switch #'s in the service manual.

                              Sorry, not true. We techs are not smart enough to make good choices, therefore cannot know about all the functionality. They don't think very much of us.

                              If you'd like a serious answer to your request:

                                  I wasn't making a statement more a question "Just a thought but not sure". My thinking was they would leave some soft sw #'s open in case they need to add one with firmware to correct a specific issue?

                                      I assume it is as blackcat4866 mentioned, we just can't be trusted. Even though were are the poor fools on the frontlines having to consult our magic crystal balls and performing blood sacrfices to the printer gods so oldschool Mike can print his email inbox for the day then immediatley shred the output.

                                      tsbservice I think you may be right that the SW may not even be active until they push it out via a FW update, in motion, also what copyman was speculating.

                                          I'm on team hybrid. I believe there are some that are left "open" to be filled as needed with future FW updates. I also know (as I'm sure we all do) that there are some techs that SHOULDN'T be trusted with elevated knowledge, and containing this information is impossible. They tell 1 tech how to do something and next thing you know they have to issue a patch because everyone is suddenly able to roll back meters. I worked with a tech many years ago that had access to Sharp's MX Series "Elevated Engineers Menu" or something of the sort. He let me see the menu briefly, but that's as close as I got. I've heard whispers in hushed tones throughout the years about these on various models. But I absolutely understand why they keep things away from us dumb techs.
