Re: C3350i/C4050i Starter toners waisted.
If the printer still demands new toner after few hundred pages, i would also look for the corresponding drums, history data and their TCR levels in Service Mode. If TCR level is below 5% or i get errors related to low toner density in Service Call History, then i would look for replacing the drum. The c4050i are unfortunately very hit or miss when it comes to drums.
Also had few cases where the printer would fail to detect toner and still show 1% or refuse to work with an "empty" toner. The printer sometimes fails to read the chip on the toner. I have to use another one to detect it, swap back to the "empty" one and it usually works. As for 1% toner, i just ignore it. Had 2 printers with 1% remaining, replaced with new ones and still detects as 1%. Few months passed and no issues so far.

Re: C3350i/C4050i Starter toners waisted.
Where do you acquire new ICPs? I've looked around, but don't really see a good source, at least in the US. Our IT guy has the skills (and tools) to replace the surface mount components, but I'm at a loss of a good source for them. We have quite a few toners from these small machines that could use a new ICP.
A simple example would be to change a TN512K into a TN321K by removing the chip with an electronic sniping tool. Chip 109 got a general purpose ICP on it I would guess 63mA.
I de-solder the good ICP and solder it on top of or rather next the blown ICP. That is handy for dev tanks and other toners. Came in handy with the toner shortage.
That is if you need to solder at all. The toner chips that comes from TN512K are marked 109 on it and fit straight onto a black drum unit to reset. Then the chips that comes off of the TN512CMY are marked with a 108, those work on the color drums.
That 108 109 think could be a marketing area thing or not. Would be good to know.Last edited by allan; 06-19-2023, 06:04 AM.Leave a comment:

one thing about these machines is you need to do stabilize and reset the gradation then stablize only. I have not had these fail after doing this.Leave a comment:

Re: C3350i/C4050i Starter toners waisted.
Thanks. Wonder if it will then reset the level indicated on the screen or just continue until the TCR value goes to low.
So you simply need to open and close the front door or remove and reinstall the toner. Great that will also do just fine.
I will wait for the next toner to finish on that machine and go and try that.
I will simply change out the ICP's on the near full toners I have. Thanks again.Leave a comment:

Re: C3350i/C4050i Starter toners waisted.
Following up on this topic since I visited a C3350i today (service call unrelated to this toner issue) and wanted to play around with it. The machine conveniently showed K and Y toner low (not empty) so I attempted the aforementioned settings to see if I could reset the toner gauges to full and remove the message.
I tried every combination I could think of with no luck including but not limited to:
Switch 6 on, tap reboot button
Switch 6 on, open/close side door & front door, back into engine switches screen, tap reboot button
Switch 6 on, open/close side door & front door, exit svc mode
Switch 6 on, open/close side door & front door, exit svc mode, then reboot with main switch
Open side door before entering svc mode, Switch 6 on, close door
Open front door before entering svc mode, Switch 6 on, close door
Open side and/or front door before entering svc mode, Switch 6 on, tap reboot button, close door
You get the idea. Also, the switch does not disable itself after rebooting, it stays enabled. Anyway I did some more digging in the service manual and found this:

Now my Japlish is not very good but from what I understand this toner reset procedure only works correctly when the machine is in a toner empty condition. In theory if you have one of these A4 models in this condition you should be able to enable switch 6 and either tap reboot (like the svc manual states) or open/close the side door and/or front door and it should run the Auxiliary toner replenishing control along with removing the toner empty message and continue working as normal. If the chip is already popped but the bottle has toner inside it then this reset procedure should work just like the A3 i-series. I believe the switch stays on indefinitely so this may be a one time setting however I'm not certain until I try this out myself. I'm hoping I can come across one of these machines at toner empty state sometime in the future to test this out.
However we may get entire purpose of switch 6 wrongly. Maybe it may be activated (one time) before ANY toner ends and when activated when you put another used toner (but not empty) and machine manages to actually add toner into IU it recovers from toner empty. So opening front door is just one of preconditions along with Switch 6 active and another cartridge.
Manual is very poor in that respect but my theory is goodLeave a comment:

Re: C3350i/C4050i Starter toners waisted.
I did tried it once on customer's machine with empty K toner, they put another almost full but not brand new borrowed from another machine but it won't recognise it obviously because of the chip. Didn't worked but at this time I don't know the trick to open the door which was later discuss here by experienced UK tech.Leave a comment:

Its not stating the individual colors so not sure if it will that option. I have a machine at the office to test on but if that setting then does reset toner level it will do all the colors.
I did do No 33 on a machine a customer rejected and it did nothing and it did not toggle back to OFF after reset and i switched it back off. No Idea what that did to the machine.
Will try that switch no6 on Monday when I am back at the office. Not something I would like t do on a customers machine.Leave a comment:

Re: C3350i/C4050i Starter toners waisted.
Hi guys.
Have a out of the box C4050i that needs toner after only 1500 pages. Changed out cyan and magenta after the machine asked for toner but the toners are still practically full. I tried the engine SW for the 8 and i serries machines to reset the toner with no luck.
I will need to change the ICP's on them to get use out of the unused toner. Was wondering if any one else had the same experience?
Are there any engine switches to reset the toner on this model of machine?
In Service Mode – Enhanced Security – Engine Firmware Dipswitch and turned on switches 31/32/33/34
Just looked in service manuals for c3350i and the c4050i. There is no reset procedure for toner level like the larger machines. DO NOT USE the switches listed above. They are for totally different things on the smaller machinesLast edited by Ziggy; 06-16-2023, 02:09 AM.Leave a comment:

Re: C3350i/C4050i Starter toners waisted.
Engine FW DipSW number 6 and open/close the side door, might take a few tries these A4 machines are garbage.
Service manual doesn't say anything about the side door. Let us know exactly what you did and how it works out for you.

Re: C3350i/C4050i Starter toners waisted.
didnt i read here that you have to keep the front door open while doing the engine dips or something along those lines?
or was that just firmware?

Check the seal on the toner. Push back the cover slider on the toner and see if any tape is still covering the exit hole. Had it a few times now.Leave a comment:
