    [CQ] Kyocera 8003i

I received a call on a 8003i that is leaving random vertical black bars on print jobs. I ran 250 simplex test sheets and 250 duplex test sheets to see how often the issue occurs if I could even recreate the issue. Out of the 500, I got it to happen 3 times. The teacher that called it in had it happen on 6 of the 60 she was printing. I have definitely run into other image quality issues on this series before but nothing like this. I am currently leaning to more of a bias/charge issue.

So far I have pulled and inspected the drum/developer/MC unit and transfer unit. Everything looks good and is fairly new with about 60k on all 3. all the contacts are clean, toner ports and ducts are clear of toner. Firmware is up to date (after the samples). I just cant seem to pinpoint the cause of the issue.

    Total count: 563971

Any help is much appreciated, I also have a ticket started in the service portal with Kyocera but sometimes it takes a little bit to get a response.

It's the transfer belt unit in the door. I would also remove the drum cover on the frame as well.
    Hope that helps !

I would suspect a flakey HVPS that drives MC given the random nature of the symptom with no other errors, that or a weak LVPS, wall line voltage ok? Had a Xerox do that and it drove me around the bend because it was the same but in all 4 colours randomly. Had changed boards and power units and the last thing done was a reseat of the transfer belt unit oddly enough. Havent heard from it since ( I say that now ).

I agree with it being the transfer belt unit but I can't recall ever having an issue with the drum cover, other than knocking it off while cleaning the area. So are you saying you simply remove it and the thing doesn't care and works fine?

They’ll have a jam, then that drum cover gets bent. It will the arc to the transfer & ruin the drum. You’ll end up having to replace both. Not sure why I never saw it on the 8001i, but I’ve had 3 of them do it on the 8003i.
          Hope that helps !

It’s absolutely the transfer belt. I’ve got a client that has done over 50million prints across four 8000 series devices so have seen this a number of times. Likely you’ll see there are pinholes in the belt. Seems like there is a discharge through it that causes the momentary short of the HVT.
Don’t mess with the drum cover. If advice seems a bit dodgy, don’t take it. Just saying.
