It's been awhile since we had one of these and I believe it was the scan motor PWB. The motor actually stops partway through the scan and that is what causes the smearing. You may also want to take another motor as well.

    Good luck.

You can try cleaning the grease off the rails. Sometimes it gets tacky & won't allow the scanner to move all the way. If cleaning it doesn't work, then replace the scanner motor & pwb like Bilyahn said. You can use the scanner motor & board from any cougar but you may need to change 26-59. Some motors are 2 phase & some are 3 phase. The connectors and PWB's are exclusive to each phase and need to be changed in unison.
      Hope that helps !

I agree with all the previous posters. As likelihoods go:

        1) scanner motor PWB (there are two different types of scanner motor boards-not interchangable)(don't install a used board. this failure is so common every used board I could find is bad)
        2) dirty scanner rail (Sharp grease turns into hard brown crusty stuff that can stop the scanner. Once the rail is clean lubricate it with a few drops of straight weight 30 motor oil)
        3) overtight scanner cable
        4) bad scanner motor (there are 2 phase and 3 phase motors. Either install the same type of motor, or upgrade the motor and PWB and set the simulation accordingly.)
        =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
        1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
        2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
        3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
        4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
        5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

also could be a bad cable pulley, most likely the two under home position, or on the mirror 2 and 3 unit, but most likely the scan motor.
Where the heck is my spring hook?

Yes they are just the same. The mirror motor part number is RMOTP0829FCZZ.
