958 won't boot into firmware update mode

I'm trying to update a 958 from G00-X4 to make it work with a Ysoft card reader. But the machine skips right over the update process (dot in the corner appears, then disappears and boots up normally). I've tried multiple USB drives, and multiple levels of firmware, same result.I also ran the HP format tool on the drive.

The USB port works in all other uses (I loaded the LDD for the card reader from the same port). But without updated firmware, it won't recognize this card reader. Any ideas?

dumb question because you didnt specify are you holding down the stop key when booting?
We know a thing or two because we've seen a thing or two.
    The medication helps though...

Try system error clear from service menu just in case anything is screwed up.

ok, with the i series ive helped folks that were holding down the wrong button in error.
          i meant no insult.
how is the folder structure on the flash drive? just FW0004 on the root?
have you tried unplugging the "front usb" cable from the mfp board and plug the flash directly in there?

i miss issues like this in the field, wish i was there.

Yes just FW0004 and nothing else.

Is the rear port for the "front USB" cable under a cover? I don't think I saw it when I was on site.

Yes, because the poster said so & gets the black dot in top right of screen.

We see this issue a lot.

Are you upgrading to resolve a specific issue or just part of routine maintenance ?

Keep trying it will eventually start.

There is a USB cable that plugs into the mfp board and snakes under the upper right side to the port on the right of machine. Unplug that cable from mfp board and plug your USB straight into the mfp. You dont have to remove any covers to access where the usb cable plugs into mfp board

This actually make a lot of sense and I will try it in the future. USB extension cables aren't well known for their reliability.

Anything extended is less reliable but they are stationary 99.99% of time. If flash thumb is recognised as external memory by machine in normal mode I don't see why not in firmware mode.
Saying that still there is nothing better than plugging direct to the board.

The cable was plugged into the wrong port (fax port). It was arranged in such a way that I couldn't even see the correct port because the cables were in the way. Interesting that it accepted the device driver over the same port but not firmware.
