Im more of an end user in the printer game (tech by default?).... My real vocation is IT Tech, but my clients keep buying junk printers for me to fix!

I have always thought it impolite to ask. Someone is asking for your help because you know more about some things than he. Now I don't mean give him your ss number.

I disagree. If you're going to explain something, it helps to know the level of expertise of the listener.

Unless I have strong indications at the beginning, I start out talking at a professional level, then adjust as necessary. Professionals don't really appreciate it when you talk to them like they don't know anything.

The toughest to help are greenhorns. They need the help the most, yet don't want to admit how little they really know. If any of you are listening, we all have gaps in our knowledge. It's nothing to be embarrassed about. The longer you do this, the clearer it becomes that you can't know everything. Not even close. You'll get to the answer quicker and more painlessly if you just admit up front that you don't know much about the topic of discussion. And tell everything that you observed and tried. "It's jamming." doesn't tell us alot.

I was born a Technician, I suppose. I am an underpaid one presently, I will still consider myself one when I get old and feeble and cannot lift a screwdriver anymore.
Back in the days saying that you are a Technician warms your heart and makes you feel proud, today unfortunately the opposite is true.
These days we are called "Copier Guy" with contemp as if we are the cause of all there woes and document frustrations when in actual fact it is due to poor training.
