It's not the size of the dog in the fight, It's the size of the fight in the dog. That 4 pound teacup in my avatar will latch on to the face of the 50 pound black dog over pretty much anything. The teacup chihuahua also considers herself defender of all cats. If one of my cats is getting messed with by a big dog, she is in the middle of it.

Funny! Anytime I'm reasonably still I've got two cats on me, with a third in line for the next available spot. Especially now, since I can't run as fast. =^..^=

As bad as my bones ache with the mild weather I have, I can't imagine what it is like to try and heal with the weather Blackcat lives in.

Speaking of pain, any of you Konica techs change a paper detect actuator in a c450 lately? Pretty much hurt my back bad while laying on the floor doing one, then broke the bitch when I put the tray in. Get to do it again today. Pretty sure the lady sitting nearby could hear my whispers of profanity, because she was blushing when I left.

              Re: Trimalleolar

Thanks for thinking of me igi, fix, others.

I'm not feeling much like a cat these days. Not sleek, graceful, stealthy ... more like a one-legged hare that hasn't figured out how to hop right yet. I bang around the house, stumbling on crutches, sure the next step will land me on my face, though it doesn't. The cats just stand in my way like I can just go around.

I'm mostly off the pain killers, just one to get me to sleep before bed. The rest of the time it's manageable. I'm starting to get my appetite back, and some motivation to do stuff. I just don't have the energy to stick to it very long.

I've got a project I started working out last week. The darn idea kept me up all night drawing pictures. I'm going to build a therapy device for my ankle. It will measure range of motion and strength. It'll be made of various lumber and odds and ends around the house. The hard part will be getting everything together. Here's an example: To start out, there's a half sheet of 1/2" plywood out in the garage. It needs to get to the basement where I can cut it to 33" x 37" with 2" radius corners, then up to the work area upstairs. Sounds like 30 minutes work, yes? If I can do it at all, it will take all day. Fortunately, that's all I seem to have is time. What I need to do is rent somebody with two good legs to do this project, probably in one day.

Once it's made, theoretically I should be able to measure range of motion, and my progress at improving it, and when I get some strength, I can add (little at a time) up to 60# of free weights. I'm guessing a healthy ankle should support at least 100# and 90 degrees range of motion (45 up from neutral, 45 down from neutral). Does that sound right? Right now it's approximately 5 degrees up and 10 degrees down of it's own accord. I can't measure the weight but it will take a few pounds, but not much. The other ankle isn't a good example. I messed it up in a car accident years ago.

The rest of the techs at my company are taking advantage of the free tech support. Last Thursday I was on the phone 4 hours straight through, one call right after another. I heard a rumor that I'll get paid for this time.

I've figured out that most of the pain I'm experiencing is circulatory, and if I just unwrap and massage the offending foot it clears up within minutes. It sure beats two hours waiting for the pills to work.

Amber will be heartbroken when I go back to work. She's with me 20 hours a day.

I'm happy to hear that things are going well for you. Keeping yourself occupied will also help you a great deal. You might ask some friends and family to let you test their ankles, then you would have an idea of the range of motion and can measure yourself against that.

                    Re: Trimalleolar

I may have discovered a miracle.

The DeRoyal brace comes with 4 of these polygonal shaped spare foam pads (basically a 3" x 5" x 5/16" stretched hexagon shape). I think they're intended to pad out the velcro straps, but I found a much better use. I have really bony ankles with the scar tissue right across it, and that's where it rubs, right on the scar/scab.

So I took one of these foam pads, and right in the dead center cut out a 50mm circle. It spaces out the raw ankle bone from the inside of the brace. If this works I might sleep through the night. It's definitely better already. =^..^=

You get really creative at 2:30am when you can't sleep for the discomfort. It was fix the brace or gnaw off the leg, and the doc went to so much trouble to fix it.

Success! Slept right through. No more need for painkillers.

I accompanied a friend to the courthouse yesterday. The security guard wanted to run the crutches through the x-ray machine, and me to hop through the metal detector. I suggested that he'd find a few iron plates, and wasn't going hopping anywhere. The wand found my iron pretty quickly. At least he didn't make me show him the scars. I expect to have to explain this quite a few more times in the future.

Next job is to get the ankle working. Construction of the range of motion device begins. Pictures upon completion. =^..^=
