Yes, I didn't expect this much traffic on this thread.

All of this traffic comes from essentially four cases:
    - Mistakes made by ignoring procedures.
    - Experimentation.
    - "Stealing" clients from other services.
    - Side effects of illegal activities, such as manipulating machine counters.

The first case is not as common as it might seem, despite the lack of access to documentation or parts.
The second case is not very common either - rarely is someone willing to sacrifice a machine for knowledge.
The third case is surprisingly common-though it's not entirely legal, small services try to protect themselves from competition by setting their own service passwords. In this case, if a customer visits a competing service, they are forced to contact you, which is a good opportunity to ask why they chose another service. This method can also protect against cheap, unauthorized services that lack access to documentation or proper tools.
The fourth case has become increasingly popular recently, especially in Asia.

Apparently $50 was enough to deter most.

These are often service technicians who have worked for several years in smaller or larger service centers, where they gained knowledge and experience (including documentation and other necessary tools) and left their jobs to make money for themselves, not for someone. Used machines can be bought cheaply, original consumables can be bought off-the-shelf in many places, often at lower prices than dealers buying from Konica Minolta. If you want to play with non-OEM, you can skip the middlemen altogether and buy directly from China. Parts are also available - from used or damaged machines. And when you need something new in exceptional cases, you can always find a service that will sell it to you.

It seems like the copiers are designed around the idea that you MUST HAVE access to the service manual and bulletins to find some of the settings. Especially stuff like dip switches, and the engine switches. There are tons of hidden menus too.
