Re: The random thought thread
So as the hurricane got close, nobody really cared. After all it was only a cat 1, and was going out to sea. Well, we got our asses kicked. After the 12 inches we got the previous week, the 14 this storm dumped was more than the ground could handle. My area became an island with all the bridges washed out. I went out the next morning to check on my mother and spent an hour trying to get to a point that usually takes 10 min. Most of the bridges are fucked. Major detours for months. Can't get coffee or drinks anywhere as water is unsafe. I only spent 3 days without power, some will not have any for many more days. No cable or net at the house. Time to go. No good to here...
We get our more than fair share of excess flood water periodically every couple of years.
We have a very large land mass catchment area that directs the water flow down through our city and then out to sea.
If it rains in the upper catchment for any length of time we get the flood water arriving here. The water carries with it all sorts of rotting plant and animal matter, which makes the place a bit on the nose for a while. After the last cyclone went through we had a bad case of hepatitis and e-coli out break through out the drinking water system.
Hope all is well your end.Inauguration to the "AI cancel-culture" fraternity 1997...

Whenever this job gets me feeling sad I just remember the Welsh word for microwave is "popty ping".
That helps.
I'm never calling it a microwave again.Somewhere there is a tree working hard to produce oxygen for you to live, NOW GO APOLOGIZE TO IT!Comment

Re: The random thought thread
One thing I've always appreciated about South Africa is that we don't really get any major natural disasters here. Funnily enough, our roads are still fucked, so is the electricity, water, cable and adslSo as the hurricane got close, nobody really cared. After all it was only a cat 1, and was going out to sea. I feel I can sympathize having never seen a real hurricane

Re: Popty-ping.
haha....
The grand daughter will love me telling her that. She's loves cooking pop-corn in the microwave.
I had conversation with a bloke that spent some time in PNG (Papua New Guinea).
In his words he told me the native language for Helicopter is 'Lick-Lick-mixmaster-sky-come-Jesus-Christ".
No acronyms in their language.. (LOL)....
Apparently "Lick-Lick" means small... Work the rest out how you like.....

Re: The random thought thread
What's with the sudden obsession with self driving vehicles? All of a sudden not a day goes past without an article on the news about a motor manufacturer testing a driver-less car / truck on the roads.
I can appreciate the technology involved with getting several tonnes of metal to navigate its way around the streets without causing mayhem but has anyone considered what's going to happen to the millions of truck drivers around the world that are going to be without an income?
Please don't suggest that that they can get retraining and get re-employed in growth industries such as food services or aged care. Do you really think some one 6'2'' in their steel toecaps and covered with tatts is going to go down well as a coffee barista or home help for your Mum?At least 50% of IT is a solution looking for a problem.Comment

My question is, if GM is willing to have people die just to save 5 cents on an ignition switch, what happens when we give full control to a machine that has parts supplied by the lowest bidder? What's with the sudden obsession with self driving vehicles? And what happens when it hits a pothole that not only knocks the wheels out of alignment but also jars one of the position sensor cameras or other sensors it uses? Re: The random thought thread
As personal note I'm not overly keen about autonomous vehicles on the already over crowed highways, but I do believe there could be use for them in the farming and agricultural industries. I'm a true believer that autonomous vehicles will one day move around on crops and revolutionize the way we get our food produce chemical free. What's with the sudden obsession with self driving vehicles?
